Default Where to look for watches in Calgary?

My watch is recently been dying every few weeks, battery changes aren't helping so I'm in the market for a new one. My old one was a Timex Expedition digital with analog hands as well and I always thought that was a neat feature. Anyway, I've had that one for literally 10 years I'm looking for a new watch, preferably something a little more fashionable or unique.

I'm not into spending a great amount of money on a rich brand but I want something that looks cool, maybe large, rugged, military like in terms of a traditional analog watch but still classy...or just classy period...or maybe something futuristic and digital like those on http://www.tokyoflash.com

The more features the better. Where would I go for a good selection of decent or even unique watches in Calgary at a good price? I don't care for big brands like Diesel/Fossil, etc. even though they have some good looking watches. Any bargains would help, I know a ton of great unique looking watches are usually knockoff/no-name brands from asia, etc. My budget is only $100-200 unless it's really something spectacular.

Costco has some good watches. I know you dont want spend a lot, but I have seen some for as much as $5000.00 in Costco!

By the way, who spends $5000.00 on a watch? What can that watch do that a $55.00 (or even $10) watch cant?

I was shocked.

Costco has decent prices but limited selection.

A tip - most jewelry stores will negotiate their prices. Markups are high and every so often they will have sales in the range of 15% - 35% off. If you know the watch you want you shouldnt have a problem walking into a store and telling them youll buy it if they give you 25% off.

Large military watch? I know you're not looking to spend a lot, but the ones I know cost a lot. Check out

Panerai
Bell & Ross
U-Boat

Those 3 are large military type watches. All automatics too.

But if from your post, you're looking for a good budget watch. So I would probably go with a Timex.

If you really want something nice. I highly recommend spending some cash on Seiko. Trust me when I say Seikos will last you as long as you live. They are great watches at a budgeted price.

I've seen quality Seiko and Citizen watches in the $200 benchmark area on ebay, thusly my self-imposed budget. Where would I go looking in Calgary?

There is a lot of accessory stores in Calgary (i.e. Watch Out, Spareparts, Eye Appeal, etc) that are devoted to things like watches and sunglasses that will carry a lot of variety in terms of names and different prices.

Lots of dept stores carry watches, and so will some clothing stores like Guess. Skate shops actually carry some pretty cool and funky watches by brands like Nixon and the like. Just cruise Inglewood, Kensington, 17th Ave, 11th Ave and 4th st and pop into the different stores to see if they have anything that you are looking for... that's what I would do.

You should probably pick based on both function and style that you are going for. For instance, I currently wear a Citizen Eco Drive everyday and am very happy with it, but it isn't well suited for the outdoors or underwater use.

FYI - Storm watches are probably my favorite brand. They are really, really cool and unique watches. I don't own one, but I have always admired them. Check out www.stormwatches.com . Also, I am pretty sure that Watch Out on 17th carries them if you want to see them in person.

In Calgary, I've seen a large collection of seikos in 2 stores. For the life of me, I can't remember what the 2 stores are called, but one is located in Chinook mall and the other is in Southcenter.

I remember looking for a Seiko diver watch, which is roughly around $400 in Calgary, but is a lot cheaper online for $250. I would recommend shopping online if you want to save some money.

This is where I found my diver.

Big assed white G-shock watches were the hottest thing in Hong Kong and Japan when i went back last year. So it should be coming in style here soon. Only white ones though. They cost around $100cdn.

I'm the guilty party. Here's one of my newest - Hublot Big Bang

Hack & Lube - I can tell you that G-Shocks are VERY popular, even with people who collect high-end watches. G-Shocks come in dozens or maybe hundreds of styles and are virtually indestructible.

Seiko and Citizen are also great choices. I agree with TheyCallMeBruce, you should look online for more choices.

Good luck

longsuffering, you are the richest man I know!!!!

A lot of CP'er probably don't know this...yeah, I won't even comment on how much the big bang cost. Looks like stainless steel band with ceramic bezel? Huge fan of the big bang, especially the ceramic ones.

I love my Gshock! For a hundred dollar watch i sure get a lot of compliments about it. It came in this special valentines gift set from Casio where it has a matching watch for my wife. Plus it's solar powered so no batteries

I also have a Citizen Eco drive for the last 15 years with no problems at all. More expensive but get titanium rather than stainless steel. It's ALOT lighter.

oh yeah get a white gshock! hehe

I don't know what the conversion would be but Luminox Navy Seal Dive Watches can be found for $149 USD. They are nice watches and the tritium inserts make them really nice in the dark.

Wow, is that ever a fine looking watch. I never knew I had it in me, but I might turn out to be a timepiece collector one day.

If you don't mind me asking what is the favourite watch you currently have in your collection, and also, if you had all the money in the world what would be your dream watch to pick up?

Beware lol. collecting time pieces can be a very addicting, and expensive hobby. I'll warn you now...the addiction is very very deep.

Well, not sure if you're asking longsuffering, but one day I plan to buy the zenith grand complications.

Its addicting..I'm looking to get one nice watch again after dabbling in it a couple years back.

Regardless,

Check out 121time.com. You can create your own, to an extent.

watchuseek.com and timezone.com have various brand forums and gallerys...watchuseek has some lower end stuff.
