Default VE6 License Plates

Does anyone know what these are? I see people with them and I am curious to know what I am missing here!

I asked at the Ministry once and they said it's people who are ham radio operators and those are their numbers.

OK, I may have just skimmed over it, but why exactly do ham radio operators need special plates on their cars?

I'm not sure, but I think I have heard about them being mobilized in emergency situations. Maybe this is so they can be identified by authorities?

When I was just a wee lad, I always thought ham radio had something to do with farm reports.

My uncle has one of these. As far as I know it's usually VE6 and then their initials.

I worked with a guy who had one. If he passed another VE6 plate on the hwy. He would allways talk to the guy on the ham radio. So it must be some form of identification for other fellow radio enthusiasts. Other than that, I really don't know.

You know, I had a complete a$$hole with a VE6 plate cut me off in traffic the other day. Perhaps I should look into investing into a HAM radio. This introduces a whole new facet of road rage, HAM rage!

Wouldn't you need a CB radio for that?

I've always wondered about these plates. I thought they were government officials or something.

Article on them: http://www.bcpl8s.ca/HamRadio.htm

Interesting to note that they are the only BC plates (non custom) with no space between any of the characters.
