Sitting up in the 300's right on the goal line, that 0.5 seconds waiting to see the puck get through, drop behind and slide in, seemed like an eternity, and will haunt me for generations. Looked just like the guys in the crowd...on their feet in anticipation, followed soon by hands on head and then covering my face...gutted.
France beating Italy in Euro 2000. The Azzurri were about 20-30s away from a win when France scored to tie the game 1-1. France went on to score the golden goal in the 103'.
Nice read. He could have included the multiplier-effect. For example, suffering any of these defeats against your most bitter rival.

I think the 1990 semifinal hurts more.. that was a cardiac kids team.
I think for me it's a question of timing.
In 1990 I was 14, and probably didn't quite realise the significance of the game at the time - it was only the second World Cup that I had ever watched.
By the time 1996 came around, I was 20, and at university in London, so everything was happening on my doorstep and we were watching all the games in the Student Union bar. The atmosphere in the capital that summer was amazing (maybe it's just rose-tinted spectacles?).
It had also come on the back of the 4-1 drubbing of the Netherlands, and I think that the expectation levels were that little bit higher. That always makes defeat harder to handle.
I will never forget standing in the SPTF as the clock ran out on the Flames run in 04. Ever. Every Flames fan who was there just stood like a stunned statue as the Lightning fans celebrated around us.
The Hitmen going 12-0 in the 2009 WHL playoffs then losing the final in overtime of the 6th game sucked.
This one depends on your perspective. This is by far the most heartbreaking moment in sports for me personally.
The setup. The last match of the English league season. Liverpool are in the driving seat to win another championship. Arsenal must beat them by two clear goals at Anfield to deny them and win the title themselves.
It does not get much more dramatic than this. Arsenal scored and were leading 1-0 going into injury time. Then with basically the last kick of the match Michael Thomas scored to make it 2-0 and win the Championship for the Arse. Great for the Gooner fans and neutrals quite likely, absolutely as heartbreaking as possible for Liverpool fans. This one still haunts me to this day. Ironically Michael Thomas became a Liverpool player later in his career.
How about the Giants last minute drive to ruin the Patriots perfect season. Granted Patriot fans had a pretty nice run with the three Superbowls in 4 years, but that had to sting a bit.
