Default Albums to recommend

I like it when this thread pops up every now and then.

I just bought The Sadies: In Concert... this is one of the best live albums I have ever purchased.

And... the Bob Dylan one. Modern Times. Like his last, Love and Theft, just as fantastic.

A Ghost is Born - Wilco
Takes awhile to get into but a very moving and deep album. Excellent lyrically.

Something Else - The Kinks
A no-brainer for classic rock fans.

The Eraser - Thom Yorke
Great album. Made mostly on computers but it's a lot poppier than Radiohead for the most part. Yorke's voice makes the album.

Just a few of the more obscure albums I have (and love):

Mike Watt - Ballhog or Tugboat?

Mindstorm - Back to reality

Kybosh - Splendordrop

Psychopomps - First Blood

Good luck finding most of these ones though.

Well, what a coincidence. . . I just got this a few weeks ago and it really is great. Basically The Sadies played Lee's Palace for two nights straight in Toronto. The first night was just the band with some cameos by other family members. The second night had a bunch of guest stars performing with them including Neko Case and Jon Spencer. Just awesome stuff. . . I especially like the intro to the second night.

Another album I recently (several months ago I guess) is Islands - Return to the Sea. They seem to like using a bunch of different sounds to make music and it really works on songs like "Rough Gem" and "Don't call me Whitney, Bobby".

Not really a fan of the guy, but after downloading his leaked album last week, it was surprisingly really good...who I'm talking about? Justin Timberlake. It's actually one of the better catchy albums I've ever heard. The interludes are just infectious, but the last few songs just suck.

edit: The album is all production, but still catchy nonetheless

heh, i meant the mini-album they released a while before funeral, as funeral is pretty much a given.

if you dig white blood cells, i recommend that you pick up "de stijl" as well, if you haven't already. that is definitely my favorite white stripes album.

today i picked up that sadies album on a whim. it is very good.

Great choices. Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot are also very good Wilco albums, particularly the latter.

Wilco is a great live band as well - I saw them a few months ago. Their new live double album is excellent.

I really haven't come across any albums that are brilliant this year (though I haven't picked up the Bob Dylan yet); so I'm just going to recommend one very underrated old chestnut. Well not that old (about five years). Joe Henry's Scar; the best album of this incredibly talented singer/songwriter/producer. Especially recommended for those who enjoy old (Heart Attack and Vine, and earlier) Tom Waits stuff. Some great guest performances by Ornette Coleman, Marc Ribot and Brad Mehldau.

I don't know, de stijl is pretty good, but my favourite is White Blood Cells.

Arcade Fire's mini-album is also pretty stellar, but I also think Funeral was better.
