Heh I know someone who has billited a few kids.

Make sure they know up front what they are responsible for. IE if you want them doing their own laundry, if the girlfriend is allowed over.

Setting expectations up front is a good idea. They are all appreciative and nice, but some haven't had to do a chore in their life and don't realize that living in someone else's house is a good time to start.

Sounds like the one my parents billeted 7 years ago. They did set expectations for him but alot of time he would make some lame excuse to try and get himself out of it. My parents were pretty close to giving him the boot by Christmas but decided to tough it out for the rest of the season. It's too bad because it completely ruined their view on billeting players and they havent billeted since.

This thread is bringing back memories.
Close family friends had a Calgary Wranglers billet in the mid 80's by the name of Ken Spangler. He was a good kid, well behaved, did his chores ect, ect, ect. until he started hanging out with one of the older players on the team....ahem Jim Playfair. Playfair was a first round pick, had some cash flow and really knew how to attract the ladies. The rest was downhill. I don't think they took another billet.

My old neighbours used to billet Lethbridge Hurricanes. They decided to stop after one particular season when they cleaned up the room and found dozens of used condoms under the bed. A season or two before that they had many problems with the player they were billetting. They basically kicked him out and the team had to find another billet for him.

They had many good mannered players stay with them though, and another family around the corner from us also had players live with them. I got to play street hockey with Dominic Pittis... ok so it was more impressive when he was the best player on the team.

i lived with my first billit when i was 16 and have lived with one evey year pretty much up until the end of this season, im 21 now. If your thinking about billiting these are my suggestions

check with the team exactly how much your funded each month and how much can be used for food. Because to be honest, hockey players eat like its there job, between, the gym, the rink and off ice we get pretty hungry, not just your nomal eaters. I have herd horror storries about guys practically starving because there billits never had enough groceries

most hockey players are pretty respectful easy going guys, if you decide to do it, when the kid arives in a freindly manor just lay out some ground rules, basically what you want and what you dont want, do your best to ask these requests as more of a favor rather than a command, if you know what i mean.

also if your thinking about billiting, i assume you like hockey? because the only billit i never liked is the first one i had when i came to play over in england. It was terrible, he hated hockey, and pretty much just billited to get an income. it was a terrible situation where i was informed i had a room in the house, but that was all.

i would say out of all the guys ive played with 9/10 would say they loved there billits, most of these kids are away from home and will respect you as there own parents

If your thinking about billiting either for the calgary canucks, or calgary royals (who didnt even take kids from outside calgary so they didnt have billits back in my day) i wouldnt reccomend it, both teams have the lowest budgets in the ajhl and the teams are run as a joke
