Default Shipping a car from the US (Texas)

CP'ers, I am thinking about buying a car from the US and was wondering if anyone has done some legwork on shipping companies...any companies that you have used? Any idea on what the costs would be (I am assuming about $1K including any duty paperwork)?

I think it's more like $2500 to get a US to Canada shipment complete with Customs paperwork. (This is based on a quote from an auto/rail outfit I spoke to a few months ago).

Another option would be to get the car shipped to someplace in Montana, and then drive it back yourself. I was looking at getting a car shipped from Houston. I think it was just under $1000 to get it to Montana.

that's a drive I'd enjoy. Some pretty decent interstate highway there. I've done the 20+ hours to Vegas, I wouldn't mind seeing the rest if it.

So when you drive a car back, do you register the car in AB first (need bill of sale and insurance), then get a plate, then drive it back?

You will need insurance, as for registration you will complete the RIV program at the border and have a certain time period to register it in Alberta.

As far as I am aware.

Check out this website : http://www.riv.ca/

Before you register your car, there some kind of modifications that you have to do. We had to add those daytime running lights and child restraint something. I've forgotten what else. They (once you crossed the border) will send you a form that will list what you have to add/modify with the vehicle.
