Festival of Lights (Vancouver)
I know the audience for this is limited but did anyone else check out the first night of the festival of lights here in Van?
What did you think of Spain?
Personally, I thought they were just ok and their music was weak. Especially using 2 Star Wars songs. That's just overdoing it.
None the less, looking over the ocean, at the downntown skyline and north shore mountains with fireworks in the air blows me away everytime.
For those of you in Calgary (or elsewhere) wondering what I'm talking about, the Festival of Lights is a 4 night over 2 weeks fireworks competition held annually in Van. There are 3 countries competing each year and then a grand finally in which they all participate.
I know things like this have happened in Calgary before, but the extent to which people in Van watch this is huge. Almost everyone makes it out for this and the streets near the water(where the fireworks are shot from) are jam packed. It seems to be a pretty big deal here and IMO it's a lot of fun and an amazing sight from the right viewpoint.

Yeah, the festival of lights is a pretty cool thing. Fireworks aren't really my thing, but I've enjoyed the festival of lights in past. Can't compare to what I've seen overseas, but is pretty nice with the music pumped over the radio. Van is a beautiful city under the right conditions.
Pity that it's also such a great reason for jerks to get drunk and pick fights down by the water. Last one I went down to at English Bay felt like a riot was going to break out there were so many brawls.

I cant do it anymore. I used to go all the time, but I cant stand the crowds, downtown is just a gong show on those nights. I can find a half decent spot to watch them from the north shore as that's where I live, but I didn't do it last night, I was a little occupied. Maybe, I will get to it on Saturday, god, the clubs on saturday night in the downtown core are gonna be ridiculous.

I've heard that about the English Bay crowd. I've only ever watched from Kits and the crowds have been great from my experience.
I recommend trying Kits if the Ebay crowd is troublesome.
I think I prefer the view from this side too, because you see the fireworks over the water and against the DT skyline as your backdrop, instead of having DT behind you.

Spain's show looked pretty good from my perspective here in East Van!
I plan to go down for Canada's show on Saturday at Kits. Should be a blast!

Holy crap, anyone see China's entry last night? Un-freakin-believable. Definitely the best showing of firepower I've ever seen. The finale this going to be incredible, too bad I won't be able to watch them.

Sort of... There's no Global Fest in the sense of pavillions and culture, etc.
It's merely a fireworks competition. Major difference imo is the setting: English Bay, twilight over the mountains and Downtown in the background with massive fireworks is pretty awesome compared to the setting over Ellis Lake.
Plus, over 1 million people come to watch either from their balcony or from any of the beaches/hills/bridges surrounding English Bay.

Anyone who's eaten a burger, fries and milkshake from peters has poops worthy of music.
