Default When Buying a Used Car

I was just wondering if anybody knew what kind of laws or regulations are in effect to protect consumers when buying a used car.

Is there a warranty or something if there are any problems with the vehicle within the first 30 days (for example) after the date of purchase or something? thanks.

Unless otherwise stated, used vehicles are sold "as is". This means that any flaws or defects with the vehicle after the sale are the responsibility of the buyer.

If you are the buyer, I think you may be SOL.

Have you tried talking to the seller? Some sellers may be reasonable; and be willing to meet you part way.

Usually I'd think a dealership would be willing to help you out but a private sale might screw you.

I'm going to buy a vehicle in the next few weeks I think, and I think that I will go to a dealership for that reason...I think that you get some kind of warranty or something that will help you out if anything major goes wrong.

I can see why this is in place; especially for private deals. It could happen that let's say Redvan sells me a car. I take that car, pull out the engine and put a faulty one in its place. I then tell him that the engine is bad, and because he's just an average guy; he doesn't have the resources available to tell him if the engine has been replaced.

Whenever I buy a used car- from a dealer or not, I always get a mechanic I trust to inspect it. There's been a number of cars that I threw away $50 on for the inspection; but who knows how much money I would have been out on some of the lemons I've looked at that were dressed up like oranges.
