Californian thinking of moving to Canada

I'm 46 and have been in California almost all of my life, but I'm hearing Canada calling me...

I've never been...

but... I'm tired of being the only one in the room who knows what hockey is.

I'm tired of the pollution...

I haven't voted FOR a candidate EVER (only against)

I like the canadians I've met.

I REALLY like mountainous, natural beauty.

I've seen SO many great little movies with 'Film Board of Canada' or something like that as one of the funders.

Is 'Rent a Goalie' still running - found this on line and LOVED it...

I could go one all day with little tiny things that call me to the North.

EXCEPT - I know nothing of real cold weather. I've never seen anything lower than 20F.

If you do you might want to move somewhere on the West Coast like Vancouver or Victoria, the other places might be a little cold for you otherwise.

I know a guy from Houston that moved here. He came up on a work assignment and never went back. Sick of the crime, pollution, traffic etc. that come with the big city. He loves it here for many of the reasons you mentioned but yeah, it's really cold here.

I would suggest coming up...if I may fuel your day dream a bit...plan a trip in between November and March, a few NHL games in Calgary, a few days out in Lake Louise, Banff and K-country...and you'll get to see beauty and experience the cold -- one you will enjoy, the other, you probably won't

My suggestion: Make a trip to Calgary in early February. Catch a Flames game, experience what a Canadian winter is like, visit the city. Then decide.

Just do what I did, when I moved to Calgary I moved January 15th so it was the coldest time of the year, then I would just tell myself it can only get better from here

Vancouver is probably your best bet for meeting all your criteria. If it wasnt for your cold intolerance, I'd suggest Calgary first. I guess your career skills/industry will also play a large role where you could end up.

One other little thing I read... I was waiting for service work on my car at a toyota dealer. The only reading material was an ancient Motor Trend. Found an article about driving in rural ontario. This is americans writing mind you - they said all was going well on the little two lane road when they cought up to a gigantic motor home. THey figured like most americans would, that they'd be stucj behind the motor home forever.

BUT it pulled over at the first turnout. This doesn't happen in the states.

It's a lot of little things that are adding up to a very big thing.

BTW - I'd only consider the west. I'd like to know calgary and edmnonton, but I think it would take years to adjust to the weather.

Sort of unrelated, but I was chattin' with a guy from Pakistan (via many years in Toronto) and he told me that the only time he works from home is when it is too cold to go outside. Literally, he can't leave the house for fear of freezing to death. I know it gets cold, but I thought that was kind of funny.

It does get cold here, but coming to Calgary in deepest darkest winter to get a sense of the place is like going to LA when it is 115 outside and smoggy as hell to see if you like it

We've had a good stretch lately and it's hit around 90 almost all month. We also get an hour and a half more of daylight today that San Jose does (according to one website I checked) so that's alright.

I'm not trying to convince a Californian that the weather here is great or at all comparable, but it isn't all driving snowstorms and frostbite.

Calgary winters aren't that bad. sure we get the odd week or two of -30, but generally when you factor the frequent Chinooks that we get i'd say the average winter temperature is somewhere between 0 - -15C. and for every week of -30 weather, we get those awesome weeks of +10 in the middle of winter

Edmonton though is not as fortunate, so once it's starts snowing in November it stays until April. Calgary is lucky to see a snowfall last a week

oh and this is coming from someone who grew up in the Okanagan, which probably gets one of the most temperate winters in the world that still includes snow

I don't know if this would help, but, I am a born and raised Calgarian, and for many reasons, there are very few other places I'd seriously consider moving to.

There is a stereotype that it is really cold here all the time but it is (and has been) warmer than Southern California up here for most of the month of July. That being said, January can be bad - there will be stretches where you are looking at sub-zero farhenheit weather, but they are tempered by our awesome chinooks.

And Flames games.

And don't fear the cold in Calgary. Just schedule your vacation for the last 3 weeks of January and you'll not encounter extended cold for more than 4 days.
