Default Kashechewan reserve

$250,000,000 for 1,800 people.

Thats about $140,000 per person.

Assume an average family of 4. Thats $560,000 per family being spent.

Any bets on how long before this reserve floods again?

Ottawa to rebuild, but not relocate, Kashechewan reserve

OTTAWA — Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice has signed a $250-million agreement toward rebuilding, but not moving, the flood-prone Kashechewan First Nation.

The remote northern Ontario reserve of about 1,800, near the coast of James Bay, is on low-lying land that has flooded twice in the last three years.

Residents were also evacuated in 2005 because of a dirty water crisis that made international headlines.

Wow, this makes a ton of sense. How long have they lived in that area?

This group was 'moved' onto this specific reserve by the Federal government in 1957.

Interesting notes to consider in this case are the fact that the majority of the community wants their reserve moved, and the estimated cost of such a move is around $500 Million. The report done by the representative of the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs recommended that the community be moved.

Soooo... are the conservatives ignoring the wishes of the community, the recommendations of their own report, and common sense, to save 250 Million?

Didn't know they were moved there in 1957. Now this makes even less sense.
