Things that you just can't fathom why they cost so much.
Two things in particular make me shake my head when I buy them...and I happened to purchase both yesterday.
Golf balls and Ink cartridges for printers.

The reason why Ink Cartidges are so expensive is because of the extraordinary conditions needed for it to be made. The actual labs are the most clean areas in the planet to the point where even the smallest amount of dust can ruin a whole shipment of it. Plus the whole getting the ink to go through a hole 1/2000 of a mm without jamming the hole is another reason.

Hookers and blow.
Seriously, some home reno stuff. For example your basic light switch costs 88¢. But if you want a three way switch, all of a sudden that's $8.

It's the gas companies and governments. Actual raw costs of fuel is about .25 per liter. About 33% of the final cost is government tax, and the rest is markup from the companies.

Yeah, there was one valve that I had to get before to fix a commercial vaccuum cleaner. One that was slightly smaller (and therefore not usable) was a whole 48 cents. The one for the vaccuum was $300. (I was more than a little pissed)

I doubt your figures. Crude oil is about $80/b in Cdn$, which works out to about $0.50/L for the raw input, ignoring the fact that gasoline is probably relatively high in the crude oil value chain. Refining oil is not free, and neither is distributing it to gas stations across the country, so these should be added as direct costs.

I suppose one might also make the assumption that the remaining product is not simply discarded.
Ok, let's simplify this. I can't fathom why crude oil is so expensive.

Cell phone "add-ons".
$5 for Caller ID
$8 for Voicemail
$5 for Conference calling
etc.
And just the whole Telecomm/Cable industry as a whole - TV, internet, home phone and all.

No doubt - that is why I said to discount where gasoline falls in the value chain. As far as I know, and I'm no crude guy, gasoline would be towards the top of value chain, i.e. the only thing more valuable would be the high energy fuels like kerosene (jet fuel). Diesel, fuel oil, asphalt and losses due to the refinery process would all be worth less than gasoline.

Shoes. It costs so little to make them(The mass-produced and mass-marketed ones anyway), and the prices are jacked up beyond belief. It was just over $200 last time I bought a good pair of Oakley boots.
