Default 50th Birthday Party Ideas

So my Mom turns 50 this year. Two years ago was Dad's 50th and we planned this big party, did a slideshow of pictures from the time Dad was a baby all the way through to the present. That party was a huge success. But I don't have any ideas of what to do for my Mom.

Her birthday is in mid-late September and the party has to be in Sundre. They have a summer place up there and a lot of their friends won't travel to Calgary, even for this party. We have a building that we can rent cheap and there are some pretty good grassy areas around the building.

Mom doesn't golf, and her only major interests at the time are yoga and photography.

Hope this is enough information to get the creative juices at CP flowing. My gf, Dad and I don't have any ideas of what to do that is different from what we did for him.

Thanks!

Well, why does it have to be different? If the slideshow worked for your Dad, and I presume pretty well the same people will be present this time around, nothing wrong with doing it twice. I know you would like it to be unique, but sometimes that is tough.

The other thing I might suggest is you and your family members do a play of your Mom's life, instead of the slide show. BUT, then your family has to be the type who does not mind the limelight))

If she is into photography, perhaps have it on display as well. She probably has still lifes as well as family pictures and you could do a nice collage with appropriate write ups for each picture.

I did this once for an ex-girlfriend for our 1-year anniversary, but I think it can be used for your Mom's case as well. Not really a party idea, but something perhaps to begin her special day, before all the other festivities begin!

Buy a private hot air balloon ride for her to watch the sunrise in the morning. Either go up with your Mom, or buy the private trip for her and your Dad together and watch the sunrise from the balloon! For added effect, blind-fold your Mom and make her listen to an IPod or something so she doesn't hear the noise, and take the blind-fold off at the perfect time facing the sunrise.

If you do the surprise thing (which I highly recommend), make sure you let the company know ahead of time, so the balloon is all ready to go when you arrive in the morning.

Is there anything historical that she might like? This doesn't apply here but for my grandfather's 80th birthday in Winnipeg we took him on the Prairie Dog Express; an old steam passenger train. Took a 45 minute trip where we went for a dinner and a dance, then train back to Winnipeg.

Or how about flying somebody in? An old friend who has moved far away or something.

My sister and I are planning her husband's 40th and this idea might be one you can utilize.... Set up a theme for the party. If she's 50, she would've been a teen in the disco era. Did she disco? If so, do a disco theme where everyone dresses up in 70's gear with wigs and whatnot, and have nothing but disco music playing. Make her feel like a teenager again!

My Mom and Dad have been together since Mom was 14, we used pretty much all of the pictures for his 50th, otherwise we probably would do that as well.

That has some definite possibilities. None of us are overly shy.

That is a fantastic idea and Dad could definitely help out with that.

I really like that idea. How much does something like that cost? Nevermind...just remembered, Mom is terrified of heights. And when I say terrified, I mean she has an irrational, deathly fear of heights.

Now that would be a lot of fun!

Who is her best friend from childhood?

Find her, and fly her in.

Two weeks ago we had a 50th for my boss, we get along great and she is a really good sport. It was a surprise party at her house. "The Girls" took her out for a spa day while people showed up at the house.

We went to a used clothing store and bought 50 bras, with the help of a sharpie each one was decorated and/or named. Such as "training bra", "first date", "prom" and yes, "The Bro" & "Mansiere" (from Seinfeld) were in there as well. All 50 bras were hung on her clothesline.

As for gag gifts she got many things, some of which were:
A bottle of prune juice
Glasses like Bubbles from the Trailor Park Boys wears
A box of adult diapers
A fake handicapped parking sign
A cane (with a speedometer, horn & rearview mirror)
A paper fan that had "For Hot Flashes" written on it
A box of Viagra
A dozen roses (the vase was a bedpan)

She had to wear a tiara the said "Princess for a day" and one of the bras outside her clothes for the night. Also 3 HUGE buttons that said "50 years old" on them.

She also got a flowerpot stuffed with styrofoam and 50 suckers jammed in it. The side of the pot said "50 Sucks!"

I also made a card titled "1957 A year to remember"
It is 10 pages long and includes, various 1957 events, celebrity birthdays, the incumbents, the Academy Award winners, Top music singles, sports winners, 1957 prices (Bread was 0.18 a loaf) & a bunch of quotes from 1957. It ends with a pic that I photoshopped her head on a baby's body.

I have the card saved in a Powerpoint presentation, I can PM it to you if ya'd like to check it out.

Hope some of these ideas help.

That is an awesome idea, I'm going to remember that for a couple of friends in the next few years.
