You get what you pay for. Youre not going to get a doctor looking at your eyes for free. If all you need is a new prescription then maybe youre OK with the free exam. But if youre worried about possible problems or have a family history of eye diseases then you might want a doctor to look at them
Depending where you go, youll see either an optician or optometerist or if you have problems you may see an ophthamologist.

I just had my eyes checked the other day, it cost 85$ at Southcenter Optometry (or something like that.. it was in the bottom floor of Southcenter). It was a pretty thorough exam and the doctor explained everything and kinda talked me through everything he was doing.

Wow, isn't this covered by medicare? In BC, you'd get a covered exam every 2 years. I think Saskatchewan is the same.

You also pay PST.
i say that, but I think a portion of the cost is covered by healthcare and the rest is not. It's a non-essential service. Same with dentists.

My face is a bum!

I really wonder if the price increases are because of people now having the ability to buy glasses and contacts for much cheaper elsewhere, leaving eye clinics needing to make up for lost income.

I wouldn't say that, My last two visits to the eye doctor have both cost me $85 ($170 total) only to be referred to an surgeon... When the day comes, I'm knocking on wood my third visit I'm able to get a new prescription for my eye's...

It's beyond me how eye exams and going to the dentist isn't necessary.. it should be covered by healthcare..

First time I had an eye exam, I went to my wifes optomitrist, a guy that I swear wants me to die, so he can have a shot.... I was pretty sure I had a depth perception problem, but he said I had 20 / 13....
2nd opinion... depth perception problem....
But both cost me $75.... go go health insurance

I'm not saying it's non-essential, I'm saying the government has said that, and that's why it's not covered.

I pay $85 here.
It has to do with your insurance I guess.

The provincial government used to pay for the exams here, but as part of the Klein cost cutting measures this was de-insured on the list for Alberta Health Care. We all know how unnecessary good eyesite is anyway...
