Default Anybody eat raw eggs?

The steak thread about cooking and rawness has piqued my interest in raw eggs. There are many camps on both sides, some say that raw eggs are beneficial...your immune system was evolved in a time where your body needed the pressure of certain bacteria or threats...but mainly that denaturing protein in cooking eggs destroys some of the food value or important substances that are beneficial.

The other side says that not all the protein is available for digestion in raw eggs and that the danger of salmonella infection is too great. But the stats show that salmonella infections affect like 1 in every 80,000 eggs so you'd have to eat 80,000 eggs to get sick.

Does anybody eat raw eggs here?

No, you could eat one egg and be very sick. Who's to say that you won't get that one with salmonalla?

I have before, but only on a bet.

I used to love raw eggs, and they were a huge protein blast to your system. Plus the added crunchiness.

It was also a good cure for a hangover if you could keep it down.

For hangovers I like sticking a cold egg in a glass of boiling hot water and chuck it down before it's fully cooked, really hits the spot.

I've eaten a raw egg before, in a red eye. Beer, clamato and a raw egg. A bunch of us chugged back one each, kind of as a dare at a party. I didn't think it was that bad, however it isn't really something that I ever crave to eat/drink.

I did it once, on a bet, to re-enact the scene from Rocky. Suffice it to say, I won't do that again.

I forget what was said, but I know that I emerged from a few undergrad CMMB (cellular, molecular, and microbial biology) and biochemistry lectures thinking that I will never eat a raw egg so long as I live.

Back when I was serious into bodybuilding, I ate them all the time. Lots of conflicting reports out there about raw egg yolks being high in cholesterol etc., but a power lifting friend of mine from back then told me something about "good" cholesterol and "bad" cholesterol, saying that cooking the egg actually produced the bad cholesterol, but in its raw state, the yolk is quite healthy.

Not sure how accurate he was, but personally, I had two raw egg yolks every morning (along with tons of more cooked eggs (whites only) throughout the day) and saw no negative side effects to my health (cholesterol-wise).

This obviously was all personal experience and it might be different person to person.

If it's protein you're looking for, try fish also. My diet back then consisted of fish, eggs and chicken breast mostly and fish is a great alternative if you aren't interested in eggs.

Raw Quail eggs are served at sushi bars all the time. Tasty, but other than that I avoid eating raw eggs. Oh, except for eating cookie dough!

It was suggested to me to try it once, while heavily intoxicated. The person that suggested it thought it would be hilarious. Long story short, the egg didn't stay down long and the person that thought it was going to be hilarious ended up having to clean his living room carpet the next day.

If you ever managed to contract salmonella from raw or undercooked poultry or eggs, you would never, ever eat them again. At first I was afraid I was going to die, then I was wishing I would. Nasty nasty nasty stuff.

Weird but that post looks like I wrote it. Years ago I got salmonella from cheesecake made with uncooked eggs. I was deadly sick. I was sick for four to five days. For the first three days I couldn't be more than five seconds from a toilet. It's the only time I've wished I would die. Anyone who eats raw eggs is nuts.

Doesn't the salmonella bacteria exist on the outer shell of the egg? If I recall correctly the chicken carries the bacteria and passes it to the egg when the egg is laid. There must be some way of killing the bacteria therefore before eating the egg.

As for eating raw eggs ... lots of tobasco or some other hot sauce blended with the raw egg makes it quite tastey.

I eat raw eggs all the time. The risk of salmonella is present but fairly low. In order for an egg to get salmonella the chicken must have it first. In other words the chicken must be extremely unhealthy. This usually happens in high feed lot type situations. So if you buy a slightly higher priced and free range type egg the risk is made even smaller. Basicaly, do it at your own risk. I do it and am not worried at all.

Some sources say that eating too many eggs can raise your cholesterol, but others say it is fine. I try to eat omega -3 enriched eggs, which potentially can even lower your cholesterol.

I was in a show a few months ago that required two actors to down a Prairie Oyster ("...a raw egg wooshed around in some Worcestershire sauce. It's heaven for a hangover!") onstage...did wonders for their singing voices!
