Calgary's always been particularily high on itself civically, only now that we're over a million people that we get noticed. I can see the comparison.

There's always been boosterism...
Edmonton v. Calgary v. Saskatoon v. Regina v. Winnipeg...

Over time, the Alberta duo obliterated their competition, and now as Calgary is pulling away from Edmonton in many regards, they are acting like this self-absorption is something new.

The reason why a lot of rural Alberta are more Edmonton friendly is simple. Edmonton is like a huge small town with lots of blue collar workers and secondary industry. (I am aware they have an eclectic and cosmopolitan scene too, as well as the bigger and more funded/recognized university, but this is largely overlooked). Calgary on the other hand, are the shifty white collar folk, with massive skyscrapers and much more noticable big city issues... much harder to relate to.

I read this article in the Globe today, unfortunately it's subscriber-based access only. Jeffrey Simpson is a good writer. I can see the parallels between Calgary and Toronto, and certainly in the way each city is perceived from other municipalities.

For the most part, however, the article is complimentary to Calgary in how the city deals with its growth. He mentions that other cities (particularly Ottawa) should take notice. Also mentioned is the ongoing battle between Mayor Bronconnier and Premier Stelmach.

Robyn Regehr is welcome in my hometown. I admire his attitude towards the frozen playfield; he does not fear losing balance or traction upon that slippery tract.

Well considering Bronco is constantly in the media whining and complaining about how Calgary has no money to do anything, I can understand this perception.

That said, Calgary is a nicer city then the rest of the Prarie towns. We do have some justification...
