Your First Job After Uni/College
Recently started my first job out of Uni and just wanted to see what type of work other people landed out the door.
I found it pretty hard to find good work out here in Van, but luckily I found something I think I'll like.

Geez you know thats about 20 years ago. My first job was in software development writing restaurant management software using C.
For that I got paid a royal amount of 26k per year, and later found out that I was working for one of Canada's most wanted criminals.
ah the good old days.
Good luck to you Winsor this certainly won't be your last job.

My first job out of uni was that of glorified baby-sitter for children in Taiwan who wanted to pretend to learn English. Not the best, but was great for travel.

Well, I guess technically my first job after graduating uni was working in a lingerie store, which was horrible. My first office type job was working for Rogers, which was also horrible.

First job out of uni was last year... an admin assistant at my dad's firm. Pretty basic, might as well have called myself a coffee runner. Left for travel overseas, came back earlier this year to the same firm, and now I'm a glorified coffee-runer... a project administrator!
I haven't bothered to try THAT hard to get in to other industries, but hard enough to know that Calgary's business job market isn't all that its cut out to be. Harder than most people think to get into the hot industries.

Unless you're in engineering, finance, accounting, or geology, getting gainful employment in this city is hard to come by. I've been searching for months now, and I have a business degree and an arts degree from the U of C - I'm thinking about going through a staffing agency to help out, because I'm not having any luck.
Honestly, I see people with no education who are younger than me with higher-up white collar jobs making at least twice as much in downtown Calgary...Why did I go to unversity again? Arrgh, I'm just frustrated lol...

^^ engineering, employers seem to be falling over themselves for graduates. I've had more then 5 companies asking me for interviews, and just purely on the fact that I'm finishing my engg degree... not looking at my resume, transcript or anything.
My first job... my future is a little unknown (get a job or go for my MSc) but on the side of getting a job, my current boss asked me to come back full time to work for Canadian DND.

Junior programmer for Sobeys making $26,000. I was working on changes to their inventory system and converting some programs to use the HST rather than the GST and PST. It was all COBOL on a mainframe.... I lasted 4 months before I had enough of that torture.

my advise (as a fellow engineer) would be to work now. there are so many opportunities for engineers right now it's crazy. when the market is slow and you can't pick and choose as much, that might be a good time to go back to school. that's what I'm planning to do anyways.

Got a full time, permanent job with the Government of Saskatchewan before I finished my master's degree (pre-thesis, post-course work). Stayed for five years and then moved on to Calgary. I have a BA and MA in History. (MA is specialized)

Worked in the marketing office of Rogers Video in Richmond BC.
Was making under 20K and trying to afford living in Vancouver. It didn't work. Had to move back in 6 months totally broke.
Good times though. I sometimes miss living in Vancouver. Don't miss the rain though. Or my crappy, dank basement apartment.

Ha -- no pictures, but it was really an awful job, horrifying how many creepy disgusting men are out there. It really haunts me. I mean, I worked at Walmart, but working there was a whole new level of crap to deal with...

Richmond!! I didn't know that! My old stomping grounds! But yes, cost of living in Vancouver is extremely high.

Same job I have been in for 2 years.
Interviewed in the Peg, Kelowna, Saskatoon, Vancouver and Victoria.
I really wanted to live in Vancouver, hell they even flew me out for the 3rd interview but I just couldnt make the finances work.
At that time, Calgary had the best costographics of all with the offered income. Income has shot up 17 percent in just 2 years so I cant really complain. Plus I love hiking in the mountains and golfing in Kananaskis.
