mp3 Cell Phone: You decide! ... well you help me decide.
Hey everyone , i hope your summers going well and if not i hope it will start to.
As some of you may know , I'm a lurker , allways on the site but never posting.
But today is a bit different , i need to post in order to get help from my much trusted CP brain trust.
I'm in the market for a cell phone , a good one , more specifically a mp3 cell phone.
Since I'm going into grade 5 and than will be going to college in one year times. ( yes i no it was a lame attempt to be funny but with The Pres craze going on i had to try )
I'm actually going into grade 11 and i will also be working a full time job during the summer, and with my birthday coming up my mother decided that i could use a phone and than she offered to get me one for my birthday. ( yay 16)
She said she not worried about the price , she just wants to make sure she gets a good one.
So i would like to hear your suggestion as to witch phone would suit my needs and witch one would bring the must bang for my.... mothers buck
i would like a phone with these features , easy computer to phone music transfer( a good or expandable memory for the music on the phone), a decent camera , that can take video and of coarse text messaging.
to be honest i don't know much about the pay plans , so I'd jsut want to know if there good or not.
thanks in advanced and i look forward to hearing you suggestions.

i have a sony ericsson w810i
great for music, comes with decent headphones, has a good 2 megapixel camera.
also comes with usb cable for easy music transfer, and expandable memory. i have a 1GB memory stick in it but there are larger available. i couldn't be happier with it.
fiance just bought the iphone, which is really cool. one thing the iphone won't let you do that the sony will let you do is use mp3's as ringtones.

This is my phone, it kicks ass.
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_k790-1484.php
A little pricey though...
Great MP3 player and a 3.2 Megapixel camera to boot.
Plus I got a free 2 GB memory card from Rogers.

Do you travel overseas? Telus now offers the 8830 or something and it's a world phone so you can use it anywhere. Personally, I'm not a fan of the blackberries... but that's because I'm lazy and don't want to learn how to use it. Also, we've had a lot of complaints about the Moto Q... software issues and the like. I'm a fan of the Palm Treo 700 in either version. (Windows OS or Palm OS)
You have to pay for the price of the phone, and then you pick your airtime and email plans. (Unless you're a heavy email and web user and don't talk a lot, I'd recommend a separate plan for your voice and data services.) If you need more help, just hollar.
To the original question, I'd just stay away from Motorola. Their products have a higher replacement/repair rate than other phones. My experience is that Samsung is making the best phones right now.

I have the Sony Ericsson wi80i and have nothing but good things to say about the phone. Maybe I'm just biased to Sony for some reason but I really like their phones. The wi80i is an mp3 one too and the sound quality is much better than I expected it to be.

Off topic...but does anyone have information about the iPhone in Canada. My understanding is that Rogers will be carrying it and the release date will be sometime after the US release date (which just happened). So when can I get an iPhone?

Rogers will be carrying the iPhone exclusively in Canada, yes. When will it be released in Canada? No clue. Europe is Q4 2007, Asia is in 2008. So a Canadian release may be around that time.
Personally, I would rather get the LG Prada, but that is only available in Europe.

And I think I already told you this, but my understanding is that Rogers wants to wait and see what Apple does with their liscencing. They will only decide whether or not they want to launch it once they see how well it sells and whether or not Apple changes their tune about downloadable content. In other words, there's no launch date yet as Rogers hasn't actually come to an agreement with Apple.

To use MP3's as ringtones on nokia hardware you have to enable an option on the phone that comes pre-configured from the provider to DISALLOW that. Most nokia phones can do excatly what you are asking, but the providers turn it off on some of the lesser phones, and sell it as a "feature" on some of the more expensive ones.
To enable it you have to Edit the phone settings using a USB data cable, there's no other way around it..
As for a phone to to get that does what you want, the nokia 6275i will do everything you said outta the box, and even more slightly modified...

Just an FYI with the iphone, batteries are not easily replaceable, and you have to send away to apple to get them changed for $80US once their dead, and apple has said they will die eventually. I have heard talk time is also a lot less that what Apple says it is.
I have also heard things about many missing features like a camera without a flash and no direct connectivity to itunes.
Also, they have been criticized because it costs about $200 to make, and they are selling for $600 or $800 us. But since their selling out everywhere, I don't think you can fault apple for that.

Well it is an apple product so I expect some pretty harsh criticism to be thrown around by the people out there who have a huge hate on for apple (and the people who don't).
The batteries are a concern of mine. If I am using it as an iPod and a phone the battery would get eaten up potentially pretty quick. But every battery dies eventually, that's not really something to fault the phone for. It seems like battery technology is way behind everything else in the mobile world.
The camera is not really a feature that is interesting to me anyways. The only time I use my current camera phone is when I am drinking and the picture usually isn't as funny in the morning as I thought it was the night before. But I can see how some people would want that feature.
Regardless I am still interested in the phone when it comes here. I think my plan is running out in the next couple months, hopefully I can save some money on the phone by renewing my plan.
