Shaw Internet stuck at 10.0MBps?

This is really strange, I noticed my internet was crawling and I thought it was my router so I disconnected it but I connected 2 different computers and a laptop directly to the Shaw modem and every computer has only a 10.0MBps connection instead of the usual 100.0MBps.

Do you know what may be causing this? I have one of the old grey Cybersurfr modems, did the change over the Docsis slow down all the other modems or something? Or are all my CAT5 ethernet cables really slow for some reason? I've set the networking drivers on all computers to full 100 full duplex but they refuse to connect to the internet at that setting and will only accept 10 or autonegotiation.

What's wrong? Is my modem fried? Too outdated? Shaw capping me? Anybody have these problems before?

um, 10Mbps is the maximum download speed for the xtreme-i package. the fastest connection Shaw offers is nitro, which is 25Mbps down and 1Mbps up, so there's no way you'll be pushing 100Mbps through that modem. you're reading what the maximum bandwidth your network card can accept from the modem is, which has no effect on your internet speeds unless your connection is faster then that (which it isn't)

EDIT: didn't notice that you're still running the old Motorola modem, thought i read that you already swapped it. anyways you will want to swap that for a Docsis modem as you'll get much faster service which is a lot more stable. you should be able to just bring that old modem to any retail center in Calgary and they can swap it for you over the counter

It's because the modem you have will only ever give you a 10.0Mbps connection. Your router gives you a 100Mbps connection. Keep in mind that it really doesn't matter as the max you'll get with that modem is about ~8Mbps (and that's being extremely generous).

If it is getting slow, I would recommend just getting the modem swapped out for a DOCSIS modem. The speeds are extremely consistent. I have the extreme service and I personally have had great experiences with it.

maybe a dumb question, but have you unplugged the power from the modem for a minute, plugged it back in, waited for sync, then plugged the network cable back in?

Yes, I've unplugged and reset the modem a few times to check. I realize that I will never attain actual 10.0 MBps download speeds from Shaw, my problem is that my network connection keeps telling me it's only a 10.0 MBps connection when before, all the connections would at least tell me 100.0 MBps. Am I imagining this? For the 10 years (gads) that I have had cable internet, the status of the LAN connection has always told me 100 MBps and for the past couple of months, all the computers in my house are only showing 10.0 MBps in their status. Is this normal? I guess I could be imagining it but I could swear I've always seen 100.0 MBps there.

I'm also having wierd things like pages loading slowly or taking forever to appear. If I open many windows, a lot of pages will not load or take minutes to load. Before, the pages would load nearly instantaneously. I have no idea what is happening. I've run some anti-spyware, etc. but I usually have a clean system. I grabbed a new hosts file and it speeded up some sites (since it blocks the ads) but normal browsing still appears to lag very much.

Well, it WAS a secret...

The port directly on the modem is probably only a 10Mbit port, but yeah if you had a 100Mbit switch or router then the link on all computers hooked up to that switch or router would show as 100Mbit.

So you could take the same computer and hook it into the modem and it'll show 10Mbit, but hook it into the router or switch and it'll show 100Mbit.

If they used to all show 100Mbit on a router and are now all showing 10Mbit, there might be a config on the modem to force the ports to a specific speed that got set somehow.
