Marigolds seem to be the cure all for getting rid of most pests. We found a 4 foot garter snake (I kid you not) in our yard about two summers ago. One of the things I read that keeps snakes away is marigolds. I also found out that it keeps away other creatures that you don't really want haning around, but I forget what those creatures are at this juncture.
We did not plant marigolds but instead I bought a bunch of mothballs and placed them around the house and yard... lol. After placing the mothballs all over the place, I talked to my dad and asked him how far apart I should've placed the moth balls. He told me about 4-6 feet apart. Well, needless to say we didn't have any vistors of any sort, snakes, cats, mice, friends, family etc for a loooong time.... why? I used up two boxes and I placed them on average of one foot apart around the permiter of my house, the perimiter of my yard and random places in between.
Haven't seen a snake, mouse or skunk in my yard since then. (I live in Lethbridge along the edge of the coulees) Unfortunately mormon missionaries and Jehovah Witnesses still come to our door.
