The interesting thing is that there isn't a single movie in the top 10 from the last 10 years. Does anyone know what the highest ranked movie from the last decade is?

Saving Private Ryan?
Lord of the Rings?

Does any movie from the last 10 years deserve to be in the top 10? Probably not really.

According to imdb users its the three Lord of the Rings movies followed by Cidade de Deus (City of God).

On the radio this morning they said that this was the first year that Schindler's List was in the top ten- and that it takes time for a movie to make it as this is an "all time" list.

Which makes it a better list than some of the ones we say for the turn of the millenium (as an example); where the "100 most influential people of the last 1000 years"- most of them were from the last 50 years.

Casablanca is too low in my opinion, should move up about 2 spots or so

I don't know, Citizen Kane was a great movie for its time, but I think its still in the top spot on name alone.

And I'm not sure about Vertigo at 9 I wasn't that taken with it.

I'm glad LOTR made the list. I think all three should have though.

I hate this list. I hate the thinking that just because something is old, it's automatically better. I just hate that mentality, someone in the sci-fi list thread stated that the list mainly sucks because it is dealing with only contemporary films. Not he may have a point in the sense that the list should include some older stuff, but that doesn't mean the list sucks.

AFI's list gives too much respect to films from before the 70's. It's almost as if they don't have the balls to dethrone Citizen Kane as number one. I'm sorry, Citizen Kane is a freeking bore, a snooze fest, but it gets number one because its Orson Welles and it was revolutionary for its time. Great, make it the number one movie of its own decade, not of all time. In my opinion, the Godfather should easily take number one spot. Im rambling here, but i hate it when people "over-respect" history.

I agree with vff on most of his post althought not about The Godfather. This list is way too skewed for older movies. Maybe I am a a bit bias because I believe movies got better starting in the 70's when directors like Coppola, Scorsese, and others started making realistic movies. Most movies (not all) before that time usually have overacting and tons of cheese.

There is no movie more overrated than Citizen Kane. Let it go. Did movie-making end 60 or more years ago? No!!!

I love Singing In The Rain but is it really better than Unforgiven or Saving Private Ryan? Not a chance in hell.

I can watch the Turner Classic Channel all day - love those old black and whites - but modern movies are certainly getting hosed on some of these lists.

And it all comes down to one word: Snobs!!!

Lists like these cry out to be disagreed with. Seconds after an advance copy was sent to news outlets, film critic Peter Debruge e-mailed me: "Of all the issues surrounding this list, my biggest question: Where did 'Fargo' go?"

In the aftermath of the first list, issued in 1998, I received enough complaints about missing titles to supply two or three more lists. No doubt most of those 1,500 experts are themselves dismayed by titles that did and didn't make the cut. But such lists serve two functions: (1) The television special makes money for the American Film Institute, which is a noble and useful institution, and (2) some kid somewhere is gonna rent "Citizen Kane" and have the same kind of epiphany I had when I first saw it as a teenager.

The list will become a retail tool.

The Bicycle Thief is normally one of the best rated films ever, i'm shocked it's not up there. I am happy to see the Wizard of Oz still there though, that's a timeless classic for kids.

The problem with movies now is that they are all either remakes (normally worse than the original) or rip offs of older movies. It's rare that i see an original movie that is out there. Just because they have better technology it doesn't make it a better movie, might be better visually but the story seems to get in the way.

I think this list is mostly a compilation of the last two generations tastes. In 10 years the list will be rather different, perhaps enough to knock the venerable Citizen Kane off it's high horse. But really, how many movies released in the past 10 years are even worthy of top 50, let alone top 10? Return of the King... maybe, but I can't think of any others.

Still, Kane is an amazing movie, both technically and artistically.

.
There have been many strong movies in the last 10 years that I think deserve to be on there and some that should be in the top 50

American Histroy X
Usual Suspects....okay, 12 years ago, but still recent
Memento
Matrix
Pianist
Crash.....I know, lots of people hate it, but im puttin it there, brilliant movie.
Shrek,
these are the ones that come to mind.

These arent all top 50 material, but I think if the AFI had some balls, they would throw some of these movies on the list.

There is no question that modern movies have a stigma against them. In all fairness to AFI these lists generally have a bias towards new stuff and forget the old.

A few movies I might have in my top 10 are Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River, The Green Mile, and Silence of the Lambs.

That said I've yet to see another movie like Casablanca. Was the Godfather good? Yes. Was it great? Yes. Was is slow as molasses? Yes. Maybe I'm painting an unfair portrait of the Godfather as I sat down and watched the trilogy in 3 days, but my God people it was slow. Complain all you want about Citizen Kane being #1 and slow, but let's call a spade a spade here.

Maybe tonight I'll rewatch the Godfather and I might change this view (as it has been a while, I haven't had the desire to rewatch due to slowness).

I agree with most here that older films are given too much credit. I finally did watch Citizen Kane last year. Was it interesting? Sure. But the best of all time? Casablanca was a better movie I think.

I do like these lists as they give me new (old) movies to watch. There's never enough time, is there? I've only seen 36 of these.

My favourite is on the list, but at 72 (Shawshank), I think it's listed far too low.

I'm a big fan of Orson's films but The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made. Period.
