Team Building Events
I've been volunteered to help organize a team building event for our group at work. I was wondering what you guys have done at work and what you liked. There's about 30 of us and we don't have a ton of money so "Hookers and Blow" is out. Any suggestions would be a big help

If it is a primarily young and male workforce then paintball followed by a BBQ. If not I've heard of people from my company going horseback riding in K-Country.

I can't beat any of those answers, especially the group sex one which could either build your team or destroy it, especially when you get an unexpected intrusion from Roy the sales man responsible for southern alberta.
Paintball is ok but dosen't work great because it dosen't really build team, especially when you have an office jerk who likes to execute his victims with a shot in the head.
I went on a team building seminar a few years ago, and we played an all day game that was basically like a whole bunch of work areas that forced you to play as a team. Almost like the team events in survivor.
A team was tied together and had to go through a fairly simple obstacle course.
The next area was a huge puzzle with the pieces spread all over an area.
At the end of the day there was a BBQ with steaks. Of course the losing team didn't get steaks they got hotdogs that they had to eat raw, with no mustard.
Just as an add on, when I was with Drake doing HR consulting, we used a team assesment software package called piccasso which analyzed the composition of your teams (ie sales, accounting) and showed you where the holes were in personality types that could cause fracture points.
It was pretty cool.

I opened this thread thinking "I wonder how long it will take somebody to say 'Hookers and blow.'" Wow, right on the original post. I think that's a CP record.
One thing they do at my work is Pub Night. We are downtown, so we usually end up getting some night club like Tantra. I'm not sure how much is paid by the Social Club, but tickets cost us ~$3 each which covers 2 drinks and some munchies. I think the clubs give us a good deal because it helps their Friday nights get busy earlier- ie when the regular customers start to come by at 7:30 they see the place is already half full, and come in. By the time the night clubbers are out in full force all us office geeks have gone home.
Might be something to look into.

Believe it or not, I suggest curling. Our office went and it was actually a pretty good time. Most of the office, including me, had never curled before and it was much more fun than TV makes it out to be. Every team was picked randomly, so can people actually engage with other people in the office as opposed to their regular core. And every team dressed up too. We also got the office to donate some prizes to the winning teams.
That, or a crime spree.

I have a friend who runs a business where he throws corporate team building events.
He does things we call fun-crawls where he'll hire a bus and take the crew to about 3 fun events. ie, bowling, laser quest, and dodgeball(my personal fav). He also throws in some drinks, prizes and other goodies and usually ends it at a pub or something like that.
He does all the organizing for you, so you only need to contact him, tell him dates etc. and he will contact all the venues, transport etc.
If this seems like something of interest PM me and I can give you more details/contact info for my friend.

For our Xmas event we went to the firing range and shot guns and assault rifles for 2 hours. I've been to a lot of corporate and xmas events, but that was easily the best time I've had.

My office always like to go to Schanks. Last year I got a bunch of play money, and gave people money for winning games or amazing feats. Then I held an auction for door prizes - people could spend the play money - but the gifts were secret, so they did not know what they were bidding on. Like Deal or No Deal. They seemed to like it.

Our social club had trouble finding curling ice at this time of the year...it might be something that has to wait for fall...It was an absolute riot though and I thoroughly loved it.
