Anyone else watching it right now? It's a sign of changed times......... Alexisonfire is playing right now and literally more than half the fans are standing there holding cell phones up to take their absolute crap quality 15 second videos, and nobody is moving a muscle.

I know the mmva's probably aren't the best example as people don't generally mosh anyways, but even at concerts over the last year or so, I've noticed that camera/video phones are taking over crowds. It's to the point that they completely kill some shows, because way too many people are just standing there trying get the perfect video, and i don't know why because I have yet to see a video phone that shoots a video that's anything more than laughable in quality.

Maybe this didn't deserve it's own thread, but I just wanted to get that off my chest, and see if anyone else has noticed this crappy trend. This thread could also be used for anyone who wants to discuss the MMVA's.

Cell phones are just the new lighters. At least it gets hands in the air...even if they don't wave.

Like the poster above said cell phones are the new lighters, every concert I've gone to the artist will say get your lighters and cell phones in the air.

People actually trying to record at a concert just kill the energy. I don't mind waving the cell phone, but to those who, as stated above, stand stalk still trying to grab the perfect shot, just give it up.

Exactly. To the two posters who said they are the new lighters, I have to disagree. Lighters were used for slow songs. Cellphones are also used for slow songs now a days, but what I'm talking about is the countless people who stand there filming a band during the whole show, when there should mosh pits and people haveing fun. These people kill shows, and there's too many of them now a days.

I have no problem with someone taking video of one song. I mean you have the technology to re-live part of the concert over and over again. Why not?

Record the entire concert is lame I'll agree. But capturing a song, why not? I took this last year in Port Hawkesbury NS during a Joel Plasket concert. I only took the one video and a few pictures. Personally I like having the memory and it's also a consistant reminder of details.

Recording the entire concert is lame, but there is nothing wrong with 1 song or a certain part of a song, and there is nothing wrong with taking pictures. Plus I appreciate it if I can't go to a concert but I can find clips of it on youtube.

It's just the people who do it the entire show that annoy me. If you do one song or just a little bit, it's ok, because the rest of the time, you're out there jumping up and down and screaming your head off. But to do it the entire show, you're not contributing any energy at all.

I'm not going to lie I don't really pay attention to people that are doing that, I'm usually just focusing in on the concert but that may be because I can't multi-task.. ...

No offense intended, but when I go to a concert, I go to see the band, and nothing else. I couldn't give a **** what everyone in the crowd is doing, unless it's somehow preventing me from seeing/hearing/enjoying the show.

Granted, I typically don't go to shows with mosh-pits (though sometimes I do). If getting knocked around and knocking others around enhances your experience, then I guess I can understand why you'd be chapped. But as I said, I go to see artists/bands with the sole purpose of watching them.

I suppose lots of bands need an energetic crowd to give a convincing performance, and I see your point in that regard.

That's actually what I'm talking about. I wouldn't really care if it was something like Mariah Carey, but if it's a live band that needs to have that energy, it's a little bit pained when half the people around you are stalk still and quiet. I don't know how to put it...it's erie. It depends on the concert.

*Shrug* For me it's like instead of cheering after a goal, you're standing there trying to hold your phone steady to capture the celebration. Then imagine a good portion of people standing around you doing the same. It's weird.

Yep. Every time I go to a Mariah show, there are those kids with the cameras, but it doesn't bother me.

But yes it totally depends on the concert. There are certain shows I've been to where the crowd has been so into it that they looked like zombies. It added to the effect, though.

Good hockey analogy, though.

If it keeps morons from moshing I am all for it. I will never forget when I saw Big Sugar at the Stampede on the Coke Stage. There were idiots moshing to rock reggae. Gordie finally stopped in the middle of the song and told the people to quit it. I hate nothing more than the pre-pubescent mindless numbskulls who mosh to anything including the hip, and big sugar. There is a time and a place for it but not every band. If you want to mosh go to a death metal or punk show - not an everyday rock band.
