I myself have lived in both. Well I think we can all agree that Van is wetter and gets less sunshine than Calgary. If you like snow and cold, with short, not very hot summers, with cool nights, Calgary is the place for you.
If you like rain, not as frigid temps in winter and decent summers and warm nights, Vancouver is for you.
I believe it is mythical to some point that all it does is rain in Van in winter, just as mythical as those whom dont think Van gets snow. However, dry cold or not, calgary is cold in winters, even with the odd chinook. I personally hate Calgary weather, both winter(too cold) and summer(not warm enough and short) and would much rather have rain and clouds over sunshine, cold and snow anyday of the week.
Guess it is all a matter of preference.

growing up in Fort McMurray, Calgary is Ft Lauderdale in comparison. The winters are definitely not cold. I cycle to work year round and get about 15 days total that it's too cold to do that. Cools off nicely most nights and doesn't get too hot. Works for me.

Like i said, its all what your used to and preference. Calgary is cold to me. I prefer warm nights, not ones that cool off. I can still sleep if its warm, since that is what AC is for.

having spent 5 years in Vancouver that is true it doesnt rain all winter. But it is cloudy all winter long.
Also if its snowing out, it usually isnt cold - when it is cold there is no cloud cover, otherwise it wouldnt be cold out...(greenhouse effect).
Good weather for me is based on the sunshining - cloud cover and weeks on end of it is depressing.

I loved the summer in Montreal...so hot during the day and it stays warm until late at night. It is awesome coming out of a bar at 3am when it is still 20 degrees and crawling across the road to have some cheap 24 hour pizza. I miss it...

I hear what your saying, but to me -5, -10 is still cold to me...which is a common temp when snowing here. As one can tell i despise winter altogether. I could handle a little winter if we actually had a hot long summer here, like out east, but since our summers are not close to my liking, it makes winter a little tougher to endure.

the only problem is that when it does, and it gets cold at night, the whole city is a skating rink and nobody knows how to handle it the next morning.. That said I live on the North Shore so all the hills make it a lot worse

Interesting because -5 in a dry climate such as Calgary is like +5 in a humid climate like toronto or a wet one like Vancouver.....
I remember being in Toronto when it was about -14 out, thinking no biggie, boy was it ever cold out, felt like -25 in Calgary.
Those average temperatures stats dont mean a whole lot, because as i said dryer the climate the easier it is to deal with colder temperatures.
in Cagary if its -30 out for a few days, once it warms to about -10 it feels so much warmer and a lot easier to take.
No Canadain city had good weather or a good climate compared to most of the world.
You want the same weather everyday move to Hawaii.

Van, Mtl, Tor, Wpg, even to a lesser extent saskatoon, regina have warmer nights in summer. Much warmer at night than here.
I want hot days and warm nights!!! I love heat, not 20 degree heat, but 30 plus if fine by me. Its warmer the last few years here in calgary during summer, but still not as hot as other places in Canada. Like i said, that is all my preference though.

Calgary is pretty famous for being hotter in the late afternoon - and warm right up until sunset,i think we should change that from cool nights, to cool mornings...

I've lived in Victoria for the last two years, and I absolutely loathe the weather there. Sure it doesn't rain all winter, but it might as friggin' well. Its so overcast and damp all the time, even if its not raining, it feels like it is, or its going to. Grey skies all the time just might be the most depressing thing ever.
I never thought I would miss the -35 degree winter days in Calgary, but after living in Victoria, I really did. Because even when its bitter cold in Calgary, it can still be sunny. Don't get me wrong, Victoria is a beautiful place, but I would take Calgary's weird weather (hot one day, giant snowfall the next) over months of gloom any day.

I am quite aware of the diff in dry vs wet cold. However I never, nor do i claim out east is warmer than calgary, winter wise, its all relative and the same essentially, cold! Calgary is not warmer nor colder than Toronto in winter. Of course it will be easier to take it drops down to -10 from -30, either way, its still cold.
However Vancouver is warmer in winter than here in Calgary.
As far as moving to a warmer climate, trust me, i am trying dearly to leave. Just has to be economically and career feasible.

Although I love the summer in Montreal, the winter is gloomy, cold and icy...but the city still has so much fun stuff to do that it makes up for it.

Speak the truth!!! Montreal and Toronto are two of most fav cities in Canada for sure. So many things to do, especially for a single guy like myself....love it there. Anyways, that is off topic, so i wont say much more.

I'm always guaranteed at least one snow day per semester too cause my school is on top of a mountain and they can never make the roads safe fast enough

I was amazed when I was in Toronto in late November to see what fall is actually really like. The grass was still green and they just got there first snow the day I was leaving. Meanwhile I think we had our first snow 2 months earlier in September. I still don't mind our weather though, except I wish our winters had way more snow. Brown/melting/dirty is not a good look on any city, and it's what it looks like in Calgary for most of winter.
