2007 CALGARY STAMPEDE GRANDSTAND SHOW
THE SPIRIT OF 1912
Under the Cowboy Skies
“The Spirit of 1912” celebrates the magic of the Calgary Stampede, a magic that is the heart and soul of the spirit of the west.
In every era throughout history people of vision have come forth and shaken up the world around them setting in motion a whirlwind of new ideas that have touched the hearts and soul of people the world over and instigated creative movements of change.
In 1912 that was the magic that was released when Guy Weadick, Flores LaDue and the Big Four welcomed the world to the very first Calgary Stampede. Since that time, the magic that was created on that fateful September day carries on every year in a spectacular celebration of western values known the world over as The Calgary Stampede. Cowboy folklore is filled with the tales of the massive expanse of what we call, “The Cowboy Skies”. These magical skies often took place at night where brilliant points of light sparkled against a velvet India ink background. Beneath The Cowboy Skies, it seemed as though you could see forever.
In the spirit of the adventure of life in the west – often high drama would play out on the impressive vistas of the Cowboy Skies. – Anvil-like thunderheads could be seen for hours before a single drop of rain was felt. Towards the end of day, twilight and darkness crossed the skies, foreshadowing the adventure of the night, and, when the summer ended, snow could be seen falling far in the distance – slowly approaching, bringing the silent whiteness of a winter’s day.
It was under this panoramic theatre in the sky that the Calgary Stampede was born. The magic of the twinkling stars sharing the sky with the brilliant explosions of fireworks portrayed the excitement of the world-renowned western adventure that calls Calgary home. But the real magic was the concept of people of all cultures participating in the Calgary Stampede; an idea that was established on day one, and continues through to today.
In 1912 for the very first time the people of the First Nations and the people of the nations of the world who were establishing a home in Canada joined together on the streets of Calgary creating the magic that we call the Calgary Stampede. Coming together as sisters and brothers in one family – people from the world over and the First Nations of Treaty Seven established a western tradition that is the heritage of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and is the theme of our Grandstand Show “The Spirit of 1912.”

This intrests me about it this year
Quote:
Light Up The Night!
Reflecting the fireworks of the very first Stampede - our team of International award-winning fireworks artists have assembled special pyrotechnic materials from Spain – China – Italy and France to present a myriad of stunningly beautiful individual kaleidoscopic scenes; soaring instances of complex kinetic detail each precisely executing one of the five thousand plus fireworks cues designed to produce an atmosphere of inspiration and excitement. Against these magnificent multi colored display of thousands of individual pyrotechnic starbursts, our show will pay tribute to the spirit of multicultural unity that was a part of the very first Stampede. This celebration of the human spirit comes alive – as guest stars who have graced the stage of the Cirque du Soleil – and singers, dancers and musicians from across Canada join the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede in a spectacular commemoration of western values that we call “The Spirit of 1912”.

I know it might be un-cool to go see the grandstand show but I enjoy it.

I'm sure Otto is going to be really pleased that his thread about the Stampede, is already completely derailed into a thread bashing Edmonton.

Ok, then. Klondike Days/Capital Ex DOES suck. I've never been to the Stampede to compare the two though.

Well having attended both on numerous occasions, the midways are identical. If you head to the event to do rides, they will be the same. Heck, Regina Buffalo days uses the same carnival group as well. Hence same rides.
Personally, I do find the Capital Ex to be a waste of time. However, I also find the same bout the Stampede. Dont really have an interest in either one. The only thing I like bout Stampede, is that it literally feels like im on holidays all week, due to little or no work at the office.
Capital Ex/Klondike days, same ol thing, just something to do for the week. Stampede is much the same way and definitely not the "greatest outdoor show on earth", by any stretch.

I'll be going to the big O&Y bash at Fort Calgary on the 11th, they've got INXS and Collective Soul playing this year.

Does Calgary have a Taste of Calgary? Taste of Edmonton is easily the best part of the Capital Ex week.

Well, sort of. Imagine a not particularly very good pancake with undistinguished syrup served cold beside a fairly greasy pair of pork sausages on a styrofoam plate and, if lucky, eaten with both a plastic fork and knife. Are you imagining? Good.
Now imagine you are attempting to ingest this breakfast feast in the company of a vast number of, not to mince words, ######ed people who have placed a disproportionate amount of importance on this bizarre breakfast ritual and who have congregated in distressingly large numbers, outfitted themselves in a range of cowboy-themed items that go from the only mildly offensive to the completely unacceptable in the modern era and who all Howdy, Yahoo, and engage in inane blather at loud volume to try to be heard above the 3rd rate rent-a-band doing its level and loud best to add to the Western ambience with generally nasty country music.
Now imagine it is likely cold, maybe raining, and you are more than likely severely dehydrated and hungover from the Drink of Calgary the night before.
THAT is the taste of Calgary during Stampede week. Free Pancake breakfasts throughout the city. An instrument of darkness spawned in the nether regions of hell.
Now, free Stampede lunches, dinners and beer are a completely different thing. Those work.

LOL, sounds like fun. But I'm talking about the event where restaurants from throughout the city get booths and sell small portions of their food for pre-purchased tickets.

Taste of Calgary exists, but not during stampede week. It's in late July or August if I remember right. I think they have had winter ones in the Devonian gardens as well.

As a born and raised Calgarian who hadn't been to the stampede in 6 years, I went to the rodeo last year for the first time. I went with a pile of oil and gas guys and we had a blast. There was 20 of us and we there was plenty of free beer. The rodeo was actually a blast, I was very shocked.

Is that a corporate event? I can hear it from my front porch in Inglewood. Last year was Ian Thorley, that was awesome. I can hear it but have never been to Fort Calgary for the show. Are tickets available. I wouldn't mind seeing collective sould but INXS is a waste of skin. I heard the second single they released with the Canadian kid (after dirty Vegas) and quite honestly think that it was by far the worst song I have ever heard. They are gasping for air after Hutchence croaked. They should have left if alone.

That is actually one of the best parts of Stampede week. If you are truely enterprising, you can get into some kind of party that allows you eat free for a week. Some of the bashes compaines throw are pretty impressive, all things considered.

Pencil me in for Nashville North - Jack Ingram on July 9th! WOOT!
Guess I'll have to find a way to get out of work and get there early. Went to Nitty Gritty last year (or maybe the year before) and had to get there at like 2pm to get a seat. Lots of bud went down that evening... ahh.. the stampede.
