Default Camping

I posted this on another forum but havent got much response. Help from the CP crew would be great.

I havent done much camping in my short time in Alberta.

Im looking for camping thats between 1 and 3 hours from Calgary. Id like something I can drive my car into but has sites that are private with trees and bushes separating you from your neighbours. Were going to be camping in tents. I dont want something thats party central but I dont want grandpa central either.

Id like to be able to leave Friday afterwork and be able to get a decent spot.

And it would be nice if it was near some decent hiking.

Any ideas? Specific campgrounds would be great (and links).

Thanks

I like Jarvis Bay in Sylvan Lake. It's 1.5 hours from Calgary, and the campsites are exactly as you described you wanted. The only thing is I am not sure about hiking around there.

The other thing is that you probably have to start booking now if you want to go in August as it is very popular on weekends. This reminds me I should book a site! We usually go in the first weeks of September when all the kiddies are back at school and the University has started up. Less busy, and still decent weather. On another topic... who goes camping in the winter? Bleh!

I know the perfect spot in McLean Creek... even on the busiest weekends, no one ever goes, because no one knows about it. Its a legitimate camp site, and the log guys come around... $10/tent/night...

Only problem is its also on a free range cattle place, and they are noisey in the AM after a night of heavy drinking... its only happend once (been there 3 times) but they came right next to the tents moo'ing and dumping everywhere...

but other than that, its a pretty good place.

If only i could tell you

...

or just PM me.

Well if it's hiking you want then you should head to either the Banff/Louise area or Kananaskis country. There are plenty of camprounds ranging from te huge Tunnel Mtn one in Banff to small provincial ones. Two Jack Lakeside is a nice one just outside Banff.

Try Carseland-Wyndham Provincial Park SE of Calgary, about 45 minutes. It's nice, but does fill up quickly on long weekends. Other weekends it's more manageable.

Also, head west on the 22X past Bragg Creek to the aforementioned McLean Creek, or keep going to Beaver Flats or Paddy's Flats. I actually haven't been out that way in a couple years, so I don't know for sure what it's like now, but I used to love it out there. It's in the Kananaskis Elbow Valley with some pseudo-mountains around, so lots of hiking can be had.

http://www.bowvalleycampgrounds.com/

There are a few different campgrounds depending on what you are looking for....flush toilets, power, no power. If you pick the actual Bow Valley Campground, make sure you are there early, it fills up really quick.

Kananaskis is one of the best i've ever been to. very private, beautiful and every type of spot you could want (with respect to services available in the stall). it might be too late to book for this year, i dunno, but it's definitely worth it.

Spray Lakes outside of Canmore is beautiful. Lots of hiking up there as well.
