Default Google moves to take on Microsoft

Google will announce an initiative on Thursday that will take its applications beyond the web and challenge Microsoft on its home turf of the computer hard-drive.

The internet company is launching Google Gears, an open-source technology for creating offline web applications.

A key differentiator of Microsoft applications is that they can be used without an internet connection. They are launched from the computer’s hard drive and files created can be stored and accessed on that drive.

Google Gears will enable its own applications to have the same capabilities. Google Reader, a news reader, will be offline-enabled from today and other applications would be expected to follow.
Good. I hope an operating system is next.

Sounds neat! A mail client with features and stuff at the level out Outlook would be a HUGE killer app for this.

For sure.

And just like ALL Google software, I'm sure anything they develop will be top-notch.

Sketchup is the best 3D-drawing program I have used in a long time.

Google won't take on Microsoft's terrority of OS, but they will be more politically influential then MS in the very near future, at least 5 years. Google's initiative in online ad's will put Google as the top company in the world.

MS must be pissed at always being the bad guy, having Apple nip at them, and watching Google passing them in the review mirror with a cheerleading squad.

Microsoft is scared. Their CEO was dumb enough to call Google a one-tirme pony, they look absolutely terrified of Google.

If you want something like that now, try OpenXchange.

Haha....no kidding.

Perhaps around 2010 I'll switch to Vista. Although it would be better if open-source software was developed that supported all the latest games.

Yeah I've seen that one before, that's web based though, I was thinking more of an offline mail client, a free open source one that can compete with Outlook (like Thunderbird, but better ) Hopefully someone will make one with Google Gears.
