AO traded...
To the Canadiens along with Ilja Bryzgalov for goalie Ray Emery and winger Matt Cooke.
Start the comparisons to noops, but I needed a definet #1 goalie. Ray Emery is a favorite of mine and I needed him on this team. AO is a franchise player and we wish him the best of luck in Montreal, but when you have guys like Crosby, Penner and Kessel, it makes the blow a little less painful.
Matt Cooke is a great defensive forward...and with Draper, Maltby and Ricci on the team, the defensive aspect of things are taken care of.
Of course now Dom is on the trading block. Any and all offers for him will be heard.

When you NEED a goalie, you have to do what you have to do. Emery slipped through your hands once, good deal getting him this time.

Interesting. There were a couple teams that ended up with 2 really good goalies after the rerates. I figured they would cash in but I had no idea that it would be like this. Great asset management Troy.

I'll agree that Troy get's the better end of the deal but in this case, when it's for a player you really want, sometimes you take the loss.

Montreal is pleased to welcome Ovechkin to the club. While we believed in Emery as a elite goalie down the road we, now Ovechkin is an elite forward now. Raycoff will be sufficient as a #1 until Bryzgalov challenges for the spot.

Thats the second time you've give Ovechkin away you dufus!!!!!!!
Smart asset management by the Habs, Bryzgalov is still very, very cheap, and Ovechkin is more than worth it to move Emery.

You can't forget that Spike was not the only one GM going for Emery. That had to drive the price up. There aren't enough Emery's for all the teams that could use a guy like him. The good old supply and demand thing played a huge part in the value of Emery, especially after the rerates were done.

Not to be discounted is Bryzgalov being much more valuable than Cooke in my opinion.

The way I look at it is that Emery would be available for Ovechkin at any time in the future. So with Hasek still deciding and likely back for 1 more year, the Blues could have used him as their #1 for next year. There is also a strong chance Giguere goes elsewhere as a UFA, making Bryzgalov the #1 guy if by chance this happens and Bryzgalov plays a full season as the Ducks number 1 we can see the Habs end up getting AO and a goalie rated as good as Emery as soon as the 08-09 season for Emery and a grinder.
That being my opinion, I do have to admit that Goalies are by far the hardest thing to get in this league.

eh, i thought i'd agree with goffie on this one, but after further research Hasek "may have played his last game"
http://rotoworld.com/content/playerp...ams=DET&id=130
And i cant see Anaheim letting Giguere walk to use Bryz as their #1. Bryz is way overrated and IMO will never be an 80 OV goalie.

Yeah, goalies are definitely tough to get. But like you said wait to see what Hasek is going to do, than if he does retire there are other options out there like Curtis Joseph for example who should come cheaper and get you by for the year.

True, but I don't want to have to do this again next season. I want to know I have a goalie for the forseeable future, not stop gap measures for the next couple seasons

Outstanding deal for the Canadiens. I'm in awe, Beerfund. Emery is a good goalie, so the Blues aren't left completely empty handed.
