Another thing that is really simple to do. All you need is a heating iron for seams, Seam glue strips, carpet tacks and a kicker.
What you do is lay out the carpet where needed, making sure the wood strips with tacks in it is nailed along the walls (this is what keeps the carpet down on the ground. Then you get the kicker (a metal device with a foam pad that you smash your knee into, it pushes the carpet into the corners and edges as well as attaches it to the tacks. This is only needed near the walls. You have to do this literally to the entire wall, every wall.
If you need to deal with seams, then install all carpet first as described above. Once that is done, lay some Seam glue strips underneath where the seam is. You then need to plug in the iron, let it warm, then slide it underneath directly on the glue, so it warms it up. continue to move it up the seam and push down on the freshly warmed glue/carpet so it attaches properly.
And you're done. If you need to do a repair job, just chop out the offending area, cut another to exact size and do the seam thing exactly.
My dad used to install carpets when I was younger, so I know a lot about it.
