Engineered Eco-City : Dongtan

If you haven't heard about it, give it a quick google and read it. One of the most facinating things I've ever read.

The quick symopsis is that its a Eco-engineered city, maximizing transit use and eliminating burning of fossil fuel cars. Crop waste are burned to generate electricity, and the heat by-products are recycled to reheat homes. The city's infrustructure is designed to maximize city heating/cooling, and channel out water to prevent flooding. Its just a amazing masterpiece design.

Interesting that the footprint for each citizen is still slated to be above what is considered sustainable though (according to the Wiki article). I guess we're doomed no matter what now!!

Given that it is in China, here is what happens: everything will be full of lead and mercury, carcinogenic chemicals abound, structural collapses, and tainted food.

I think its a neat idea. But it seems like it's point is somewhat irrelevant seeing as how, its accomplishment is somewhat tainted by the fact that:

1) the footprint is still greater than is conventionally deemed sustainable
2) It could only be done in a planned economy, and there are very few of those kicking around these days.
