Documentary Alert!
CIA'S SECRET WAR
Sunday October 15, 2006 at 10pm ET/PT on CBC Newsworld
repeating Monday May 28 at 10pm PT on CBC Newsworld
Quote:
Did the CIA abduct, torture and hold men prisoner on European soil? President Bush recently acknowledged that the CIA has operated secret prisons. What happened in these secret prisons in Europe? Filmmakers Arnaud Muller and Steve Baumann conduct their own investigation around a European Parliament inquiry to help answer these troubling questions.
When several CIA airplanes suspiciously land in northern Poland, it raises questions about CIA activities in Europe. In Macedonia, a German citizen claims he was abducted and held prisoner in Kabul for five months by U.S. agents. Is there evidence these strange activities took place? The CIA's Secret War provides proof, for the first time, that these abductions and confinements are no coincidence, but the result of political decisions to use information obtained through torture in countries where torture is standard practice.
Taking viewers into the heart of a troubling European parliamentary inquiry-an inquiry that in many ways parallels Canada's own Maher Arar inquiry-The CIA's Secret War sparks a debate on the role of democratic nations in the "war on terror". The CIA's Secret War is directed by Arnaud Muller and Steve Baumann.

Ghosts of Futures Past
Thursday May 24 at 10pm PT on CBC Newsworld
Quote:
How much should we develop the Arctic? Can it remain a homeland? And a refuge? Or is it some kind of new frontier? Destined to be exploited?
Thirty years ago, Tom Berger changed the way Canadians looked at the North. He taught us that what happens in the North matters. That the way we act there will ultimately reveal the kind of people we are.
...
Can aboriginal people who are “of the land” stay true to values that have defined them for thousands of years AND become equal and meaningful participants in an economy based on the extraction of oil and gas? Ghosts of Futures Past: Tom Berger in the North confronts issues of environmental impact, climate change and the huge scale of ecological change.

I Love You, And You, And You
Wednesday May 30 at 10pm PT on CBC Newsworld
Quote:
ith almost one in two marriages ending in divorce and 60% of couples having affairs, people are looking for an alternative to monogamy. For some, an option is Polyamory; multiple, long-term, stable relationships. For many it's a taboo, for others a fantasy, but is there such a thing responsible non-monogamy?
This film follows two poly-families at different stages in their relationships, and explores how the lifestyle actually works.
...
This film unlocks the door on an unusual way of managing personal relationships. It examines the possibility, and even desirability, of polyamory and ask is this really the future of relationships?

Those docs look pretty interesting. The one about the alternative to monogamy should raise some eyebrows. Thanks for posting this.

I'm looking forward to these as well. CBC always shows top-notch documentaries.
And while I'm on the subject of documentaries, I'm looking really forward to this one:

And as a bonus its a Canadian film.

Homo Sapiens: The Rise of Our Species
Thursday May 31 at 10pm PT on CBC Newsworld
Quote:
How did Homo sapiens evolve? How did our brains begin to change? And why did early humans suddenly start creating art? What about the concept of past and future? What pushed our forerunners to explore beyond the narrow confines of the world they lived in? How did they learn to solve problems, to become innovative thinkers and, most of all, to survive when other species failed?
...
Seminal moments like the discovery of tools, adaptation to climate change or the hunting of large mammals are re-enacted in this ambitious documentary. At the same time, current thinking on subjects as diverse as the evolution of human belief systems, changes in migration patterns and the emergence of cave painting is revealed.
