Default Long Distance Towing Options

Well, I was supposed to be heading out oftown this weekend. However last night the fuel pump decided it had pumped enough fuel already and was done. The car is about 120 km out of town; waiting for me to find a way to drag it back.

I was looking at AMA, but on their website they say that you cannot buy a Plus membership for a long distance tow. (Even though you can buy a regular one for a regular tow.) Understandable, but unfortunate for me.

Does anybody know of any other auto clubs that allow you to join and use the services right away? Or some other way of getting the car back to Calgary? Or is anybody here a bored tow truck driver willing to do a cash job for cheap?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. (Other than suggestions that I buy a different car.)

Where's your car? I'm not a truck driver but if it's near a small town you might be able to find a tow truck driver who wants to make some extra pocket money.

I had a car towed a fair distance once and the driver and I worked out a deal because I was paying in cash.

Have you considered renting a car trailer and enlisting a buddy with a truck to tow it for you?

you can try and find a friend with plus and say he was with you.... I believe AMA membership privilages are on the person not the vehicle.

That's correct! I have to use my AMA Plus to tow my boss' truck from Hwy 8 to our shop. I wasn't driving and I just pretended that I was. No question ask from AMA.

Yep. That was option #1. Unfortunately, any of my friends with trucks big enough to tow with have such vehicles to tow campers on the long weekends. Sorta out of luck there.

Yep, and there wasn't anybody in my circle of friends or family who has plus.

I appreciate the tips guys. But it looks like there wasn't the magic option I was looking for. Which in a way is a relief, because I just got back from getting it towed home. I went with the guy- partly because I didn't want to end up with a scenario where he couldn't find the car- he tells me I owe him the money for the trip out there, and then find out the car was there all along.

It ended up costing me $220 for a cash deal- the mileage of the tow was about 140 km each way. So even if I had bought the plus AMA membership when the factory roadside assitance had run out; I still would have been about even.
