While loved ones are away...
Well, seeing as I'm very sad and lonely right now, I was hoping that some of you would have some good stories about how to cope with the love of your life being away for an extended amount of time...good stories or bad stories, both work. Some of us cope better than others...some of us don't. Which one are you???

When I go out of town, my gf wears one of my worn t-shirts to bed. She sends me pictures of our puppies on text messages too.

I tend to watch movies that I know my wife will never rent we we go together. Stuff like Sin City and 300 and shoot 'em up movies. And I cook ribs because the wifes HATES them and can't even stand the smell of them.

How long will he be away?
Whenever you find yourself feeling down it's best to look for a distraction. It works for guys, at least. When my college girlfriends were away, I tried to do something new that required a lot of my attention. This is how I got into volleyball.
Just out of curiousity: Is this the guy from the "Friends who care..." thread?

While my wife and I were dating she went to teach English overseas in Korea. She was gone a full year. Thank god for webcam and the fact that I was able to go see her twice over there. One thing I always made sure to tell myself was that now that it is over I was never going to look back and say "well that wasn't so bad" because it really was pure hell.
Oh yeah and porn helped too

I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way…but I have always believed that it is healthier for a relationship when people have there own lives outside of it…this doesn’t mean cheating or anything like that and you could still be fully in love but if they are gone you shouldn’t be totally lost you should have other things going on hanging out with friends or activities that you do without your partner…you can still miss them but there travel schedule shouldn’t orientate your life

Communication is key to maintain a relationship over long distance. I will have been with my gf for 3 years in Sept, but the amazing thing is that she lives in Toronto while I'm in Calgary (well, Edmonton now). We talk to each other at least once a day, either through e-mail during the day, and MSN and facebook when we're home. We try to see each other during special occasions (Christmas, birthdays,..etc) and whenever we can get a Air Canada seat sale. I'm in the process of moving out East, but in the mean time, I'm fortunate she has been patient all these years.
As for good stories, we make everyday special, when we are with each other in person.

I agree 100%, but am yet to ever meet a girl who doesn't get clingy when in love.

Little harsh my friend.
I understand that there are a good number of people on CP who operate in relationships very independently and work hard to separate their life from their partner's life but that is not how everyone is and many people don't cope well with their significant other being gone for a long period of time.
That makes them neither neurotic nor clingy.

you might want to do a small home improvement project that will surprise and hopefully delight your mate when she gets home. It'll compensate for all the dirty dishes and cobwebs she finds.

Normal. It is normal for people to miss their significant others when they are gone.

Absolutely. We all do. I was talking about the "hoplessly lost without them" crowd.

I don't think suegate falls into that category, but I understand your meaning.
I've heard about people like that. Never encountered any personally thankfully.
