We are thinking about camping in Jasper this May long....any experiences or suggestions for 'out of the car' style camping with basic ammenities nearby, while still being secluded and close to some trails or natural attractions?
Camped there a couple of years ago. There's a nice site just before you get to the townsite via the Icefield parkway, far enough away from town that it's quiet, close enough that you can go and grab a bite to eat or whatever. A lot different from Banff in that it's a lot less crowded. Sorry, can't remember the name of the campsite.
we live in Edson, approx 2 hours east of Jasper.
being the first long weekend of the season, its going to be extremely busy.
there are many parks to chose from.
Pocohontas is the only one that comes to mind at the moment but there are a few.
I would recommend getting there as early as possible.

I realize the long weekend will be nuts. We are planning on leaving early on the friday morning....i hope its early enough!
Cold? Not if you have the right gear, which I do. I normally only camp back-country, but with the woman, and a few friends......'out of the car' camping is as good as this long weekend gets.
I doubt thermometer has passed 15 in Jasper yet this spring. Just saying things in the North haven't progressed as nicely as Southern Alberta this spring.

I PROMISED MESS I WOULDN'T DO THIS
Tried to camp there one summer on a long weekend. Campers were herded into an over-flow space, right beside the train tracks. Not good. If you go, make sure you have site in a normal campground locked-up.
