Default Quick Car Audio Question

So, my beloved JVC deck that I bought two trucks (5 years) ago is a little reluctant to play burnt cds and even some store bought cds. Lots of skipping and getting stuck at certain points in certain songs (even on new cds).

So, do I need a new deck? Or can I just (somehow) clean the one I have? I love this deck. It's been with me for soooo long! All the transplants, all the 4x4ing, trips to BC... The things it's seen! Please! Help me save my deck!

don't take my word as anything other than an idea.
I know very little more about car audio than the next guy.

You mention moving this deck from a different car. Is it possible that the installation wasnt the best? Could it have been shaken around?

The thing is old, with the way technology is today, chances are good that if you want to even get it professionally fixed/cleaned (if possible) even looked at it would be cheaper to go out and buy a new deck.

I think you've answered your own question. The "laser" has to be aimed with a fair amount of accuracy. All that bouncing around can't be good for it.

Get yourself a new deck, and treat yourself to one that plays MP3 CDs as well.

There aren't much electronics that are built to last 5 years. It's probably time for a new deck.

That said, you can absolutely clean it and it will cost you next to nothing. Any CD store/Wal-Mart/Canadian Tire will have CD/DVD cleaning kits which is just a CD with a tiny brush on it and some cleaning solution to clean the laser in the CD player. I'm guessing you haven't cleaned it in the 5 years you've had it so I'm sure the laser is filthy by now, so definitely pick up a cleaning kit. But like I said 5 years is pretty old for almost any consumer electronics so it might not make a difference.

Actually, it does play mp3 cds. I like that for long trips, gut around town I'm one of those guys that leaves the same cd in the deck for weeks on end. I think I left my GNR greatest hits in for about 2 months before changing it.

So, there are cd cleaning kits, eh? I'm heading to the store right after I read the fire on ice forum. TYVM guys.
