Uhh, no. The last thing you ever do is melt down a unique coin like this.

There was really no intention of making these for sale in the first place. It was promotional product only. However, obviously some people think that it would be a good investment, thus they have put in requests to purchase one, and the mint has indicated they will make and sell a few if orders come in. Approx $2.5 to 3 million expected sale price.

Canadian Press story

The 100-kilogram coin was conceived as a showpiece to promote the mint's new line of 99.999 per cent pure one ounce Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins.

That extra nine makes it slightly purer than the 99.99 per cent gold coins offered by competitors.

Another CBC story

A mint spokesperson said the coins will sell for between $2.5 million and $3 million. So far, the mint has received confirmed orders for five coins.

Whoops, bad word choice - speculator is what I really meant. Been working with our scrap metals division all day....
