I like the way they describe the weight - half that of a typical hockey player.

Is that like the American measurement of distance: number of football fields?

Why on earth would anyone want to have this?

"Hey check THIS out...a pizza sized loonie worth more than most people will ever make!"

It's something people desperately wanting to gain status would buy. ######ed.

So would the $1,000,000 per year NHLer suddenly be worth his weight in gold?

I hear the Flames bought one. They are going to sneak it under center ice whenever they have to play a road game.

I guess Mr Burns will steal this and give it to Castro then....

And it's probably not for status.... more for metal traders I would imagine. It's not like you leave this on a coffee table as a conversation point.

Obviously not a coin collector.... or have any clue as to what this was intended for, do you?

Uhh, no. The last thing you ever do is melt down a unique coin like this.

There was really no intention of making these for sale in the first place. It was promotional product only. However, obviously some people think that it would be a good investment, thus they have put in requests to purchase one, and the mint has indicated they will make and sell a few if orders come in. Approx $2.5 to 3 million expected sale price.

A couple pics...

wouldn't something that size trancend "coin" and go into gong territory or something?

FYI, there are two other articles that clarify what I was indicating.

Canadian Press story

Quote:
The 100-kilogram coin was conceived as a showpiece to promote the mint's new line of 99.999 per cent pure one ounce Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins.

That extra nine makes it slightly purer than the 99.99 per cent gold coins offered by competitors.
Another CBC story

Quote:
A mint spokesperson said the coins will sell for between $2.5 million and $3 million. So far, the mint has received confirmed orders for five coins.

Whoops, bad word choice - speculator is what I really meant. Been working with our scrap metals division all day....

" Bullion coins are traded based on the market value of the gold they contain, rather than their nominal value. The face value acts as a guarantee, meaning an investor could ask the mint to exchange the coin for C$1 million if the intrinsic value ever dropped below that point."
