Feng Shui
Believe it or not, I'm serious...
I want to know more about Feng Shui (Fung Schway) before I make plans for my renos. I've been hearing more and more of it lately, and I want to know more.
I'll probably check out some books and stuff... but does anyone have any tips or anything? Anyone experienced any changes due the Feng. Is it whooey?

Your bed should not face the door, and there should be water and mirrors near the entryway to your house. That's all I know.

And you shouldn't have a straight line through your house from the front door to back door. Our house is built like that (very old house), and apparently it's one of the worst things you can do.

Yeah, our back door, the one we use most, is on the North facing side, and the main front door is on the west facing side...
I found some sites... just trying to wrap my head around all this stuff.

If your house faces on coming traffic (T junction), then you must move at once. Ghosts follow the road and will wander directly into your house

Interesting to read, but please don't spend any $$ on it or make decisions that hamper your lifestyle based on it.
Penn & Teller did an episode of their "Bull#####" show on this. They called in 3 highly paid feng shui experts to arrange the exact same house for a family. They ended up with 3 different arrangements (it's supposed to be a "science" with consistent results), and even contradictions such as one telling the family that the red couch was perfect, and another telling them they had to get rid of it! Doesn't disprove it of course, but then again I've never seen anything to prove it either.

I'd suggest trying to find proper research and studies that prove feng shui is actually effective (or even that the concept of chi is valid) before putting resources towards implementing it.

in my mind Feng Shui is right up there with psychics, magnet therapy, and religion. all have no science to corroborate anything they proclaim, and act only to siphon money from people

Well I guess that I might be the crackpot on this thread! I totally take this into consideration when doing things like renos. We just sold and bought a house and this was a huge factor...I'm sure that pleased the realtor, but such is life.
I started messing around with this about 4-5 years ago and thought that I'd just try some minor changes to see how things went. Those minor changes made some major improvements for our family, and so I have become more and more interested!
If you want some specific info, please feel free to PM me. I'm not a consultant or anything and I'm not "licensed" or anything like that; its basically a hobby or something similar.

Don't have the stove across from the sink (fire and water don't mix).
Make sure your stairwell does not face the front door directly. It means money will flow out your door.

The only one I've heard that I follow is do not have a mirror set up so when you go to bed, you can "see" yourself sleeping.
Apparently it is bad luck. (Candyman!)
For me it is just creepy so I avoid it anyways.
Found out later it was Feng Shui.

I know that one of the biggest violations of Feng Shui is having your kitchen share a wall with your bathroom.
Unfortunatly we can't all control the different floor plans we have available to us.
Funny enough if your kitchen DOES share a wall with a bathroom, your suppoed to at least make sure it doesn't share the wall with the toliet.
I dunno, I'm open to a lot of different and new age ideas but I've never really embraced this one.
I guess the basic principle is being able to collect energy from the outside world and keep it within your dwelling. Objects are moved and if you have enough money, even rooms are changed to facilitate that.
If your serious theres lot of books you can find I"m sure.

Maybe not sleeping, but a mirror near the bed can be great fun for watching yourself do other things... hopefully only if you have company.

We paid a Feng Shui expert to come and look at our house. I think he's the same one that did the Sun Life building.
There are four elements to Feng Shui: water, wood, metal, and fire. By taking our birthdays, birthtimes, and chinese zodiac signs, we are given a score in each category. Based on the scores, we may have too much fire, and try to balance that by including more water. He told us we needed to work more with water and liquids. He told us we should be working in Oil and Gas. He also said it would be beneficial to work with wood as well, either selling fabrics or wood products or even a restaurant. Currently we both work in Oil and Gas. Now, we're not going to quite or O & G jobs to open up a subway, he said other things would be fine, like selling paper products or fabrics. I do currently sell hockey cards on ebay, which are paper products.
The house was then divided up into good and bad areas. The bad areas are countered by placing certain objects in specific locations within the area. This could be a few coins, a vase of water, a plant, it varies. Nothing major is required, like knocking down a wall, or moving your furniture if it's not practical. Our master bedroom toilet lines up directly with the front door, meaning money is basically flushed down the toilet. So we put a mirror there to reflect the money back in.
Another thing he recommened was to put a dragon statue facing in (direction of objects such as statues are important, as some can be laying down. I've these statues laid down on the ground in stores and businesses, now I know why) to bring in more money. Shortly after we did this, I got my work bonus. The bonus was expected, but the amount was a surprise (5 figures+ ). Then I receive a phone call saying I won some money in a contest I had tototally forgot I entered (another 5 figures )
Of course there is no way anybody can ever prove this, but it has been interesting since we started to do some of the things he recommended. We had lines or credits that have been completely wiped clean and I just stumbled upon a stock that went up 800% in one day. Got in early and got out at the top. GGL on April 4th, 0.15 to 1.50.
For the ojects we placed in the house, we got creative and turned them into artwork and accent pieces, which made the house look pretty cool.
