Thumbs up Sending Something To A War Buddy - I Have A Question...

Hi CPer's. I'd like to send a package to a friend who is stationed in Iraq, and I was wondering if I can send cigars? The destination is an APO, but I was wondering if cigars would fall under some tobacco export law and get sent back, or whether you have to declare anything and/or pay a tax at the post office? Anyone ever have experience with sending cigars south of the border?

Should be fine, there's no additional costs for processing, and you'll be shocked at how fast it gets through.

My word of advice is to find out what kind of unit he's in. If its a combat role, the thoughtful thing is to make sure that he has some to share out with his bodies.

When I was over seas' my old man sent me a couple of bottles of scotch so that I could share a christmas drink with some of the other guys in my unit. It eased the tension for sure.

Nice idea.

However... why not send him something that won't give him cancer 20 years down the road (sorry... I hate smoking).
I do however like the bottle of scotch idea by CC. Good booze has got to be hard to come by in a moslem country like Iraq.

Oh sure, send him something that will give him cirrhosis of the liver instead

On a more serious note, I would be careful about sending booze to a Muslim country. Iraq may be different, but I lived in Saudi Arabia for a while. Booze were strictly illegal and being caught with booze could be met with very serious consequences including lenghty jail sentences. With the situation in Iraq, alcohol is probably the least of their worries at the moment, but I would certainly err on the side of caution here.

If you are sending cigars, don't use regular mail. Tobacco is often destroyed intentionally when sent by mail. Most major courier companies should be able to get tobacco into Iraq. You might want to contact courier first.

Why is that? Is Canada Post anti-smoking or something?

They take our offices and we fall back, they take our bars and we fall back! But the line must be drawn here! Right here, and no further!! [/picard]
