Petfood Recall Attention pet owners (Recall Expanded 3/30)
Didn't see it posted anywhere else and I went back 4 pages so hopefully no fata.
The list of affected brands
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/
It's pretty broad in reality. I know I used to feed my dogs some of the Nutro Natural Choice soft food. We also have the Iams choice cuts or whatever it is cat food for our cats
Heres a thing off Iams site to help you tell if your food is from the factory in question
http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/data_r...PouchCodes.pdf
Check those numbers. My first check had 6 numbers to the left that had a seemingly logical date, but it was in the set of numbers over where the 4197 factory code showed up. We had fed this stuff to our cats and have quite a few of these that we haven't fed them yet.
Last I heard no pets in Canada, but I know I'd feel pretty lousy if I killed one of my pets feeding them this stuff.

Looking at that recall list, I'm struck by how many brands there are.
Just looking in the recalled cat products, there are 42 different names, and you just know there are probably 4 or 5 products just labelled 42 different ways. So are the Iams/Eukanuba/Science Diet really the same as the President's Choice/Proce Copper brands?

Hard to say....but they come from the same factory. And yes that did strike something with me making me wonder if Ol'Roy is the same as these so called premium brands. Iams and Eukanuba both show up on the Iams site and I always thought both claimed to be a premiumish brand.

Yeah, it really makes you wonder how different they are if some of the supposed high-end foods are produced in the same factory and contain some of the sources as the budget brands.
Apparently there was a cat death in Toronto yesterday that may be linked to this food, in which case it's not simply an american issue.

Yeah, maybe feeding the cats the 38 cent a pouch Whiskas stuff was in their best interest and not just mine!

I'll be checking my dogs food when I get home.
What is wrong with the food exactly? What is source of the contamination?

I think it was known to cause kidney troubles in some animals? Not sure on a source.

I believe I heard that it was a gluten compound that they were using that they thought was the source. But they hadn't pinned it down 100%. It's mostly the soft foods with a gravy that are affected, so likely something thats pretty genetic to make the thin white sauce for the gravy causing it. At least that seems logical to me.

Hmm...
My cat was really sick a few days ago with digestive issues but I don't see Fancy Feast on there. Anyone else see it?
She's 22 years old though..........

Thanks for the notice Syl. I feed my dog Eukanuba and it looks like the only ones affected with them are the gravy foods thankfully.

Just because a premium brand comes from the same factory as a store brand doesn't mean the food has the same content. They will custom mix most batches of food. The cheaper, budget brands tend to have more "filler" in the food vs. nutritious content.

Yeah, my wife just had hers to the vet and he said house cats now easily live to be 18-20 years old. What does them in more than anything is dental stuff. He said if you take care of their teeth, that should help prevent other ailments from developing and should allow them to live a long time.

Wow, that is a feat!
I've had cats forever, the one that lived longest was 17 years, the other 13 years.
Wow!

And the mystery ingredient is...... Rat Poison! They aren't saying which rat poison. Based on the symptoms of the animals, I'm going to guess that it's Sodium Flouride or a calciferole.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/23/pet....ap/index.html
It's hard to imagine how rat poison can accidentally get put into pet food. I'd presume that if a pet food factory was having trouble with rats, they'd specifically use one of the many poisons out there that are less dangerous to pets.

I took my cats into the vet this morning and the vet said they are taking all precautions. This rat poison causes kidney failure, which is what the vets started noticing an alarming rate of. But it takes a while for them to collaborate, find that it's the food, and then find that it all goes back to this site in Kansas.
The vet said they have done more urine tests this past week than they did in January and February combined. Most of it was likely unnecessary; cat owners not even using the brands mentioned asking to get their pet tested anyway.
BTW, my cat Diablo got her teeth cleaned this morning. She's still pretty pissed off at me for leaving her at the vets all day. I tried to explain to her that it was for her own good (see Sylvanfan's post), but she's having none of it.

The pet food recall had been expanded.
Apparently the officials have changed their mind and it is no longer rat poison. It is a contaminated wheat gluten, so now some dry foods are affected (our cat has been sick lately, so we are concerned).
Edit: The expanded is nothing we feed our cat. Guess it is just the diabetes (which was just diagnosed).

In May of last year, our dog suddenly died at the age of 7. The autopsy said he had ingested rat poison which we thought was wierd because he was never let off the leash and we though we would have noticed him eating something like that. We fed him Eukanooba....
