Black Label Society
anyone else go to this last night?
They played Mac Hall, got there just after 7pm after witnessing 2 periods of rahter mediocre Flames hockey. The lineup to get in was insane, as it is at most concerts as of late due to the mandatory searches that go on. I have no idea who else was playing there last night (there were tow different shows, two different lineups) but the differences between the two lines was absolutely hilarious. One line of long haired, tatooed and just outright scary looking people and a bunch of 14 year old girls in the other line.
The opener was a band called Strong Arm Down. Not too shabby. They seemed very pleased by the crowd response. I'd never heard them before, but they had some decent riffs.
After an insanely long wait (it was rather aggravating. BLS got on stage at about 10:25pm, SAD left the stage around 9. Standing on concrete that long is not much fun) BLS finally hit the stage. Zakk Wylde is insane on the guitar. The sound was ok, the vocals were somewhat drowned out at times. Some highlights for me were Concrete Jungle, Suicide Messiah, Fire It Up, Bleed For Me and Stillborn. Bummer that they didn't play Blessed Hellride. Had an electric acoustic set where he played the intro to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman, that may have been my favourite part. They also had a nice Dimebag Darrell tribute.
Zakk also seems to have a saliva issue. I can't count how many times he spat in the air or on the crowd, etc. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Looked like the entire Calgary chapter of the Hell's Angel's were up on the side of the stage hanging out with the band, maybe that's why the Calgary Police were out in great numbers.
Not a bad gig, wish they had got on stage a little earlier. I must be getting old as it was hard getting up after less than 5 hours of sleep.

Black Label Society cracks me up. I have nothing against them but they seem like a band for metal heads that have grown.

Just heard the new Ozzy track. Wylde has just handed Ozzy a huge hit.

I've been to a couple of concerts at Mac Hall before with the same issues. Not really a great venue for "plugged in" performers IMO.

There have to be a few more people who recognize Zakk Wylde for the incredible poseur he is. From New Jersey glammer, wearing lipstick and tight pants to Southern, beer drinking hillbilly?
I still remember one of the Ozzfest shows I went to, Zakk walks on stage during Pantera's set with 2 Doberman dogs on huge chains, he proceeds to act like a typical American monkey shouting "f*** yeah!!!" and other sounds that animals make. He then grabs a guitar and starts playing a solo while someone pours beer in his mouth.
Unbelievable stupid.

Yeah, I was at the show also. Unfortunately, I had to leave just after "Suicide Messiah" because I was incrediably tired. What I saw, though, was good, and I'd defiantely go and see Black Label Society again. This was my first time seeing them, and I was impressed. I wanted to see them play "Concrete Jungle" but yeah, I didn't. If only they had gone on at 9:45, I might have ended up staying for their entire set.
Nevertheless, it was quite good.
Oh yeah, the other show was some band called Hellogoodbye I believe. That was the first time I've ever been to a concert at Mac Hall, while there was another concert taking place either upstairs or downstairs at the same time.

Seen BLS and Zakk play several times at various ozzfests.. just awesome. He is probably one of the best guitar players (imo) in his genre, hands down. Check out 'Farm Fiddlin' if you don't believe me.

Poseurs can't play the way Zakk does.

The guy is incredible on the guitar no doubt. I own every Ozzy release he's on and the Pride & Glory album which is great.
He's just an embarrassing human being, that's all.

It's all just part of his act I'm sure. Some bizarre stage antics. But look who he plays with (Ozzy). He's the master of the bizarre.

I talked to my younger brother yesterday...he's 15 and went to the "hellogoodbye" concert next door.
Hearing him describe how scared he was walking by the line to get into Black Label Society was hilarious.
Probably didn't help that he and 2 friends decided to wear short-shorts and headbands for the show.
