Default Hotels recommendations in Calgary, without breakin the bank?

I have four or five relatives who are planning a trip to Calgary for this June, and looking to stay about a week here. They are wanting to know what are some decent hotels for less than $130-140/night. Im fairly new to Calgary as well so I dont know a whole lot about hotels and which are good. What's a good area in Calgary in terms of hotels? I hear about the Cecil and its cheap. Any good? Has anyone stayed there before?

As a joke, I was going to suggest the Cecil. Looks like someone beat me to it.

I suppose I can add useful info to this formerly useless post... There's a place called motel village in the NW. There are a few larger hotels in the NE around 32 & 32, and there are plenty of hotels along McLeod. It all depends on where you live and what these people are planning to do while in Calgary.

Are they planning on being here through Stampede? If so, good luck.

The Cecil is quite cheap, but unless you dont really like your relatives I would suggest finding another spot.

I would strongly suggest you stay away from Motel Village in the NW... Scum lords own the place and it's not exactly very well maintained. Boy the stories I can tell you about that dump.

Some of the places, but not all by any means.

If you are going to stay in the royal wayne motor hotel or the hotel by the alcove dump bar, yes.

But they have some brand names there - the hamptons, I think best western, etc etc.. Those are fine.

what' that one downtown near the French Maid? The international hotel I think. It's not a bad place and I've stayed there on a few occasions and found the prices to be fairly decent. http://www.internationalhotel.ca/

Not sure what part of town you are looking at. I have put mine up in Hospitality Inn at Southland and Macleod, and also at Wingate or Super 8 at south end of Macleod.

He said "less than $130-140/night." Not less than $200 per night. Unless you know of a way to get a deal there.

Looking at the Super 8 in Motel Village they have rooms for $85 per night.

I have no idea about the price, but if I was staying in Calgary I would want to check out Hotel Arts. I've heard the decor is pretty cool and high tech...
Its DT.

I really don't know anything about the prices, but again if i was staying here I would want to stay somewhere near chinook mall on mccloud or in the DT area. I say by chinook because the mall is decent shopping, and close to a ctrain that can take you DT.
Overall though, what is the purpose of the trip? The most important thing IMO would be close to a ctrain..

There's a lot of new stuff along Barlow Trail on the way out to the airport. Some of them might fit in under the $130 or $140 per night rate. I doubt there's much in the way of "good" hotels under that price threshold though. If they want something decent they might have to try to budget for around $170 to $200 per night.

Edit: I just stayed at the Blackfoot Inn a few weeks ago ... they have rooms in the $130 to $150 range that aren't too bad. It's not exactly a good location as far as accessibility to amentities though, other than Chinook Centre.

Try the Delta Bow Valley downtown. Ask for the IBM rate. They don't check for ID.
