Iran conflict?
Oil just jumped $2.50 in ten minutes with rumours of a US/Iran conflict. Anyone confirm?
Could just be rumour.

I just heard about it from one of my clients.
Too be honest I had expected this a couple of days ago when the Iranians seized the British marines.

Where would these rumors come from?
No mention of any of this where you would normally look for news. Both BBC and CNN are reporting progress/dialog on the 15 soldiers thing.
They held 50 American hostages for more than a year once and it didn't come to war.

coming out of the trading world ... Oil and gas jump big time about 45 minutes ago. Whispers of the US sending ships close to the coast, and a missile fired into the ships.
No news confirms at all ... all trader whisper

From the CNN Business section. "U.S. crude oil futures spike $5.18 to $68.09 a barrel after-hours on rumors of increased hostilities between Iran and Britain."

There are a bunch of boats over there as of today -- bbc.com
The US Navy has begun its most extensive manoeuvres in the Gulf region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but denies sabre-rattling aimed at Iran. Two aircraft carriers, plus their strike groups, have sailed to the region and have begun war games involving as many as 100 US war planes.
The exercises follow Iran's capture of 15 British navy personnel, and high tension over its nuclear programme.
The US Navy said the exercises were not meant to exert pressure on Iran.
So you can scratch my dumb "they aren't reporting anything" post.

that was fair though ... no breaking news anywhere.
I almost didn't post ... don't want to start hysteria based on rumour. But that's quite a commodity spike for after hours. Usually comes with a global event.

War Vs. Iran seeming more and more likely. I could see the UK attempting a rescue mission with the 15 soldiers, followed by attacks by Iran.
Enter the US to bomb the hell out of Tehran.

I've never really understood the above strategy, I've always thought that it would be more effective to let it slip that you have a submarine off of the coast of Iran even if there's not one there.
But its just me

In the art of posturing, no one does it better than the Americans.

But a submarine can't attack tehran with wave after wave of airstrikes like the US did in the beginning of the Iraq war.
The presence is there, and with out it, there is no real threat of military action against them.

But 2 subs with a full complement of Tomahawks can certainly carve out a new down town lake front property.
Even something like a ballistic missile sub would be a huge deterant. Something along the lines of we're more then willing to supply you with enriched uranium in a simple to use exploded format.

I don't understand why the Iranians didn't just give the sailors back.....what were they thinking? Something long the lines of "I'm going to make a point of this, keep them locked up, and in the meantime give the Americans a reason to come over and kick my ass"?????
You had to see something like this happening when they were first arrested...

It's posturing and sabre-rattling. Someone draws a line in the sand and you try sticking your toe across it to see what the reaction is.
Iran claims the Brits were in Iranian waters when they were captured, the Brits say they were in Iraqi waters and their capture was illegitimate.
Today, Blair said that the UK is willing to move to a "different phase" if diplomacy doesn't work to get the sailors returned safely.
