You Rock Apple!!

I have admitted before that I am a total Apple homer, but this is just another feather in the cap of one of the most innovative companies in the last decade or so.

They could have made this an excellent product if they had included one important feature; the ability to transfer pictures directly from a digital camera over a USB cable (USB To Go). Then I could be on my 198 day tour the world trip and never have to worry about filling the memory card on my digital camera AND be able to listen to music too.

But they didn't include that so this is merely an iPod with a colour screen and the ability to show picutres at very low resolution (the screen and TV out).

The U2 player would have been cool if it was all black, but with the red wheel it looks silly.

EDIT: Video playback might have made it worth while.

Funny how Apple has completely repositioned themselves as a digital music provider first and foremost. I think the tagline for their last desktop computer was 'from the company that brought you iPod'. Anyway, it's an amazing transformation for a company that looked like they had lost all relevance except in a few graphics industries.

Its becuase they hired Steve Jobs back. Microsoft just came out with Windows I think about 6 months before Apple released their new UI. Jobs got fired for that, plus a number of other reasons (according to the movie "Pirates of Silicone Valley"). Jobs was then hired back late 90's. Thats when apple started becomming "popular" again. When the iMacs came out, and the designs of the computers drastically changed. Form and Function.

I've been thinking about buying an iPod.......any suggestions for something that is equivalent??

I have a music library of over 3 thousand songs, a huge picture library, and I want something that can "broadcast" the signal to my FM radio so I can listen to tunes during my daily commute.

I also like the digital camera to iPod connectivity idea....do any currently do this??

ipod iphoto

I don't think you can connect a digital camera directly to it, but its a slick unit. I agree with everyone though, Apples prices always have been and always will be too high.

The new iRiver H300 series has USB2Go support (for direct xfer of digital photos), EXCEPT for the models they bring into North America for some reason. Might be as simple as a firmware flash to enable it though, I haven't looked into it.

There are a few mp3 players with built in FM transmitters, but nothing that one would consider "main stream". Samsung has some I think.

For most players FM transmission and USB2Go type functionality will require extra add-on hardware.

Well at least you guys don't want the world for next to no $$.

No one asked for the world.. but if you're going to make a product that's marketed as a digital photo hard drive storage device, the least you could do is make it so people could copy their pictures onto it without a PC. Heck the thing costs as much as a laptop! It's not like USB2Go isn't a standard.

Hey I totally agree on the price thing but there must be a reason no portable device allows you to hook up a digital camera to it without a PC right? Cost prohibitive, hardware availability, there has to be a reason.

You can buy an FM antenna for ipods as well.

Like I said before, I couldn't agree more on the price but my experience with Apple is, yes, you do pay more, but the return is far superior performance out of eveerything they make.

To be honest, I think the reason is simply they don't see a big market out there yet in NA so are holding that feature in reserve so they can release it at a later date and get more people to buy it.

Like I said the iRiver H300 actually has this feature, except it's disabled in the North American sold proudct.

I wouldn't even say Apple performance is that superior (the Creative is far better sound quality wise, and everything has better battery life), but their design is so compelling it is too cool NOT to consider. About the only thing I would consider buying from Apple based on performance alone is their LCDs, and MAYBE a Dual G5 if I was doing very specific things and money was no object.

I saw a cool black FM transmitter for the black iPod today, looks VERY cool

Well, I've been fortunate enough in my career that I've been able to work on both platforms extensively and I think the difference is night and day. My job is very specific (designing packaging), but I am exclusively Mac now and pray to never go back. I also have one at home for personal/work use and find it much more reliable than any PC I've ever owned/worked on.

But damn they are expensive.

Thats becuase the core of the Mac OS is based off the BSD Unix Kernel. Which has been around for about 30+ years and still used and developed today. Used mainly in Universities and such.
