Default How is this possible???

Maybe I am not understanding this, but how is this possible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH96MhITOlk

Goldfish in a water tank at the bottom, with floating oil on top to help keep the fryer clean. Idea is that the stuff will float down to the tank and the goldfish will eat up the crap, but because oil is less dense than water, it floats.

But doesn't the goldfish need air to breath? Anyone can explain what this guy is saying?

Conclusion: I can only attribute this to black magic or possibly 14 century sorcery.

I'm not really sure what is going on. So the fish eat the the crap falling down but who eats the fish crap? I think I would prefer a deep fryer filled with tempura batter rather than carp crap!

As long as there is oxygen in the water they can survive. Not only that, goldfish are very hearty fish. They can live in bad conditions (low oxygen, bad pH) where as other fish like Cichlids will die.

Can anyone understand Chinese? I'm sure he fills in the viewer on how they're living without air...because I agree, I tried to keep a fish in a sealed peanut butter jar one time. Wasn't excellent a long term investment.
What happens when the fish die? By the looks of it they have to go through the oil to get to the water, meaning you'd be dragging a dead fish through the same stuff you cook food in...wierd.

They're speaking in Japanese. I wish there was someone on the forum that could explain what this guy is saying to us.

Yeah, that's kinda disturbing. I guess every once in awhile, the customer has to be weary of fried goldfish mixed in with their fish sticks.

Wouldn't the heat from the burners that heat the oil make the water rise to a really high temperature and kill the fish?

Fish technically don't need air; as long as there is oxygen in the water.

Now, the number one way that oxygen gets into water on Earth is from the air being in contact with the water. But fish gills take oxygen from the water. There are many species of fish that never reach the surface. Golfish just happen to sometimes blow bubbles at the surface of the water, but they aren't breathing air.

I can't see the video from work, but is the only thing keeping the hot oil seperate from the water gravity? If so, I can't see how the heat isn't transferring to the water.

Yup, it is exactly as you think it is Ken.

I totally just went and copied this from one of the comments of the vid:

Quote:
everyone seems pretty clueless so let me try and explain a bit.. Water and oil doesn't mix, so there is no heat from convection, only conduction, which is very slow compared to convection. Also, the bottom layer of the oil is cool compared to the top. Oxygen comes from a bubbler, and the fish eat the scraps of solids that fall through the oil to the bottom.
And this is also copied from comments:

Quote:
Heat rises. The bottom oil will actually be cooled by the water from the tank, bringing them closer to thermal equilibrium. A tank cooler can keep the fish cool and a run-of-the-mill oil coil heater can boil the oil at the same time. It's genius.
I dunno...I guess it kinda makes sense. Still wonder what you'd do with the fish poop. And man, those poor fish are gonna die of a heart attack or something related to eating greasy food bits day in and day out.

His comment about the oxygen coming from the bubbler is an interesting one, considering I didn't see any bubbler in the video. Maybe the guy describes it in Japanese.

I also would imagine they have to clean out the tank every week...cause I can't see the fish eating all that greasy bits and poop.

Oh and another thing I noticed! Isn't it goldfish that tends to keep eating and eating until they die? I can see all the fishes dying from over eating...like in one day.

Also, I wouldn't want to live in an environment like that. Isn't this sort of cruel to animals? I have a hard time seeing this work in North America.
