Calgary on google maps
So I was srufing Google maps and looking around Calgary, checking the usual places. Now, last time I checked over Calgary they were using some bad wintertime photos. (Everything was harder to see) To my amazement, this time, they had updated to clearer, summertime pictures....or so I thought until I stumbled upon here (i'll let you see what Im talking about). That scene really goes to show how dated the photos they are using really are! Nevertheless, Im just glad I don't live in a new community not on the map! Still cool to check

Glenmore and Elbow, eh? that image is no less than 30 months old. The school was torn down in mid-late 2005, iirc.

Weren't the two gas stations and the little strip mall taken further back than that?

Around the same time for the PetroCanada on the NW corner. The Esso on the SE corner was gone about spring-summer 2003 or 2004, iirc, so that would be the oldest this image can be. I would guess these images were taken summer 2004 or 2005, at the latest.
It's also cool looking around the Saddledome, and seeing the empty lots where Arriva I, Sasso and Vetro now stand.

IIRC, Google Earth (the downloadable client software) had a bad wintertime shot of Calgary. Hard to see much with all the shadows.
But I think Google Maps has had the same shot(s) forever.

Calgary's also one of the few cities that has a 3D downtown.
They updated my part of the city as well...both times there's been a white car parked in front of my house...and for the life of me i don't know who's it is. Wierd.

The map of Copperfield doesn't even show my street being built, and my house was finished in January 2004. My buddy's house that was done in March 2003 doesn't even have his basement dug out yet.
It also doesn't have those new high rises by the Saddledome started yet; they are still just parking lots. Link

Nope, this photo is at the most 2 years old. As I still had fresh top soil in my backyard and my driveway wasn't poured yet.

The Wal-Mart at Deerfoot Mall hasn't even broken ground in the photos and it opened in early 2004, so that part dates back to at least 2003.

Im going to say its august 2002...why you ask?
Huge clue is here, they burnt down in May, 2002. Some of the buildings have been torn down, and many of the townhome style ones are still sitting there in burnt condidtion. I dont think they sat like that over the winter, so that puts us in 2002. August gives them enough time to tear down and clear some of the buildings and also explains the green trees and dry grass.

This is definitely an old picture.
I looked at where my house is... 2 cars were parked on the drive way, one was a maroon-ish color. The only Maroon-ish color vehicle we've ever had was a ford windstar. The other vehicle, comparable length had to be the Sienna, which we traded in for a Corolla... and we've had that Collora for about 3-4 years now... It has to be between 02 and 03.

Its likely that different parts of the map are from different years. The city used to actually have lower resolution photos out west and higher res in the east. I deal with airphotos at work and they do it chunk by chunk for the province and rotate through, so sometimes they are years apart.

I remember buying my air conditioner at that Wal Mart in the spring of 2003, so it's got to be older than that.
I'm going with 2002 as well for the date of the photos.
