A Chinese woman remains defiant after a court deadline for her to allow the demolition of her house expired.

Wu Ping said she would continue to fight against any attempts by the authorities to pull down her home.

Her battle has held up a major property development in the south-western city of Chongqing.

Wow. She doesn't even live there anymore. Makes me wonder how much the "principle of the thing" will cost the developers. Sure she's sticking to her guns, and power to her for that, but people are losing millions over her, and I'm sure that if you throw enough money at her, she'll cave.

Here's a question, could they build over her legally? Or is she in such a position that doing so would seriously reduce the soundness of the structure on top of her? You'd probably need to see blueprints of what's going there in order to figure out if you could build over her. But I wonder if that would work...

Well in fairness it looks like she tried to live there as long as possible until basically the construction made that next to impossible:

She and her husband stood firm as construction work began around them, although they had to move out when access to their property became difficult.

And I say more power to her. She's making her point, and voicing her opinion.

Naa. This isn't the 80s. I like these stories of sticking it to the man. Like FireFly said, if they pay her enough money, I'm sure she'll go away.

Haha, that'd be like those Bugs Bunny cartoons where Bugs does everything he can to torment the big burly construction guys to save his rabbit hole and they wind up constructing huge buildings or giant towers or massive roads that all go around his tiny little hole.

I is estimated that over 1,000,000 Chinese will be displaced from their homes by Olympic related construction. I am not sure if this incident falls under that category but it is definately related.

A lot are positive about it, even though some very significant cultural sites are being removed, at least significant to those who have lived there for centuries. But as this article mentions the corruptness involved in a lot of this is very sad. A lot of people are getting screwed out of their houses for nothing through legal loopholes.
