An organization called Reporters Without Borders has released its third annual Press Freedom rankings, attempting to gauge press freedom in every country in the world.

Canada 18th. USA 22nd. By being in the top 20, Canada is rated as having a "good situation." The USA has a "satisfactory" rating.

18th overall, but 8th if you go categorically.

Not really surprising that Nothern Europe is the highest, and higher than Canada and the U.S. When it comes to getting fair news that does not need to worry about political affiliations or offending powerful groups, that is the way to go.

Getting news from Israel and the occupied territories is a good example. In Canada and the U.S., we barely gat any information about Israel's mis-deeds. We only hear, "suicide bomber, terrorists", and so on. The CBC is a little more likely to show both sides, but most private media outlets are too worried about being sensitive. You don't see that as much in Europe.

I was pretty pleased to see Slovenia up there too. That country has come a long way. It's disappointing to see Belarus to still being run by that control freak. If there was ever a country that needed regime change, that is the one.
