Default 2006 census released

Chestermere appears to be the fastest growing town in Canada, growing by 148% since 2001 to 9564.

Milton, Ontario grew by 71.4% to 53,939, however it is still classified as a town, so it would appear that Airdrie is technically the fastest growing city, up 41.8% to 28,927.

Calgary grew just over 12% to 988k.

Okotoks grew by 46.7% to 17,145. Cochrane up only 14.3% to 13,760. Strathmore up 34% to 10,225.

Grande Prairie is nearly 50,000 people now. Red Deer over 80,000.

According to a friend of mine, Grande Prairie is claiming it is the fastest. Depends on how you want to look at it, I suppose. I just went by percentage growth.

Edit: Barrie is the largest growing CMA, up 19.2%. The Calgary CMA is second at 13.2%. That would be their claim - not the city proper, but the metro.

Just for fun...

If the same rates/5years of increase continued, Calgary would pass Vancouver for 3rd biggest city in 2071 when Calgary hits 4.5 million.

They would pass Montreal for 2nd biggest in 2096 with 8.1 million people.

And would become Canada's biggest city in 2236 with 213 million! I hope they upgrade the roads by then!
