Citadel West for sure. This building should set the standard for future beltline projects. Looks better in person.

I voted Sasso, but if they had Arriva I would have voted for that. I did some work for Arriva and that will be an impressive complex.

A friend of mine bought a place in Sasso before they broke ground and just made 100 grand off it. Pretty good for a 5000 dollar investment a couple of years ago. He had somebody living in it paying for his mortgage as well so it was all profit. Lucky SOB.

Arriva is not yet complete, so it doesn't qualify for this year. It is an impressive complex for sure. I just don't like the faux historical base to the buildings.

UofC Health Sciences building.

So many hottie nurses under one roof and most single or in occasional relationships.

Almost bought a place in Brava, had there been concrete plans with dates for the CTrain from the City of Calgary, I would have got one there.

hahaha. i can't believe they put the lego hospital in there. I also like how they put those big ass letters on the side of the hill to remind the people in Patterson that their million dollar view consists of this horrible(looking) building.

They are all ugly and unimaginative, and fight the natural essence of the prairies. Most of them look like they are trying to be Vancouver, which they aren't, resulting in plastic.

Wow...

Not that I have, but have you ever actually designed a skyscraper?

They have to keep the school there as it is a historical building, which is the same deal with Union Square where the old Crazy Horse was. Well, actually they might tear it down and then rebuild it, but they have to rebuild to spec. You might be talking about the townhouses on the bottom floor, but I think that they had to keep the historical site the same so they decided to run with it.

As a surveyor, these jobs are far more interesting than the usual stuff that goes on in the sterile suburbs.

Keep in mind the audience that the structure was built for. I've spoken with only one kid who's been there, but she thinks it's the absolute coolest place. I imagine that for kids who spend a significant amount of time going in and out of the hospital, the fun look of the building really makes the experience less traumatic.

Interesting comment. What do you suppose the natural essence of the praries would manifest itself in building design.

Yeah, this year's slate of buildings isn't all that spectacular. Most of the really interesting stuff is still in the proposal or construction phase like Saucier + Perrotte's digital library at the U of C, Kerian Timberlake's ISEEE building, The Intertational House,The Bow and accompanying retail and cultural building, potentially the new Science Centre, new Central Library and others.

Our office used to be in there. They booted us out 5 yrs ago saying the were renevating right away, took some time to get around to it.

Does this one really qualify as a new building? Only ask as they renovated an existing one.

Completely agree.

I voted for the hospital. Ugly, sure. But good ugly.

Too bad this happened:

I voted for the hospital...I love it for the fact it stands out and doesnt try to blend in like virtually every other tan colored building in this city. Calgary already looks dry as hell, more color that is activated by all the browns is a good thing.

Personally, I think Sasso should be on the year's worst list.

I totally agree. Seeing an arial (especially if its taken in winter) of the area around the hospital shows exactly what you're talking about. It stands out right away as something different than all of the bland and boring surrounding it. Plus it has that nifty sign that is pretty much made to be seen from the air or way up on the hill.

I voted for Pontefino II, mainly because I like that sort of european style apartment housing. All of the residential towers are fairly similar, but as previously mentionned, it does look like Vancouver (which Im not all opposed too as I like Urban living vs. Urban Sprawl)

Someone needs to nominate the apartment tower just beside Brava (the old low income housing one where they seem to have stopped painting it halfway red.....yikes)

Huh, not sure why that happened. Perhaps try again and see what happens. There have been a couple of bugs today.
