Default Avs give nod to Huet

Cristobal Huet and Jocelyn Thibault started the 06/07 season as equals. Coach Paul Maurice emphasized both tenders would have equal opportunity to earn the #1 spot.

However, as the Avs enter the stretch, it's clear who has come out atop that battle. Huet is fifth overall in GAA and second overall in save percentage. He boasts a 20-11-3 record while Thibault is .500. But Thibault earned more than twice as much money.

Something had to give. The Avs shipped Thibault out the door following tonight's game. Returning from Nasvhille is Yan Danis and several draft picks. Clearly this was a salary dump for the Avs. Nonetheless, they welcome Danis to the fold and pray to God that Huet stays healthy!

What the hell did you trade Luongo for? No one else on that list is even close to him.

You couldnt of known Pairse would rip it up this season when you made the trade but that has to be a contender for the Doug Risebrough award.

I like this deal for the Av's as soon as next year, however I don't know if I would take such a significant downgrade in my backup position heading into the playoffs. IMO a 76ov goalie whether performing well in the sim or not is not capable of handling the heavy load down the stretch and then in the playoffs. Huet's statistics are strong, but he only has played in 45 games, he might prove me wrong and shine with the heavier workload, but in the past it seems that goalies with ratings below 78 or so are not capable of handling the starters role for extended periods.

It's definitely a huge risk, but I've committed a lot of salary already for next season and wanted to unload T-Bo's hefty contract.
I was concerned that if he took a ratings hit in the off-season, it would become even more difficult to move him.
At any rate, if Danis can win a few games for me down the stretch and Huet stays healthy then I won't have any regrets. If Huet goes down - I'm done.

I am in total agreement that it is a good longterm deal and the salary dump helps, just talking from experience as I lost 2 goalies to injury right before last seasons playoffs and it was not pretty!

Well the Sim does tend to be easier on goalies in terms in injury than the NHL is. But having a goalie who's got a lower rating having to do the bulk of the work is always dicey if you don't have a great backup. I know I should have kept BJ as my teams backup. Everytime I play my backup now it's guaranteed lose day and my top guy needs to be rested at least 2 times every 7 games or he becomes totally useless instead of semi useless.
