Car accident question
Well today hasnt been a good day...got in a car accident today. Someone slammed on the brakes for some reason, then the person behind them in a minivan did the same, as did I...only I couldnt stop in time. Wasnt too ugly, but definitely more than a fender bender. The problem is that the airbags came out. And I hear airbags out=writeoff usually. Is that true? Just tryin to find out how screwed I am...

I had the same thing happen to me this past summer. What's the year, make etc of your vehicle? My vehicle was a write-off in a similar situation and the air bags didn't go off.

'99 Cavalier, four door
The worst part was I live in Edmonton and have Flames and Stampeders decals on my car, so whenever people would drive past my car they were laughing or saying "Calgary sucks!!".

My wife had a 2001 Cavalier wiped out on St.Albert trail and 137th. The insurance company actually gave us a pretty good settlement on the car though. We had one fricking payment left on it, and as a result they wrote us a cheque that was completely useless as they made it payable to my wife an General Motors. We had to get GMAC to contact our insurance company instructing them that they no longer had an interest in the vehichle, and than we finally got a cheque.
Hopefully you didn't get any injuries from this. You definitely want to give it a couple days and see how you feel and if you're having problems get it documented right away. Don't tell them right now that you Don't have any injury's because you don't know yet and won't until the andrenaline wears off. Even if you do suffer injuries you're probably screwed by the governments 4,000 limit on neck and back injuries.

Well thats good. Too bad I wont be seeing any of that. I dont have collision. I didnt even realize it either. My parents originally got me the car five years ago and set everything up on it, but for the past couple years when I got into college, Ive been paying for it now. I had no idea it had no collision on it. So Im basically getting a buspass

I just got in a similar accident with my 2002 Protege 5 (although the airbags didn't come out for some reason) and it didn't end up being a write-off. I'm actually wishing it was though as there was a crapload of damage to the front-end and I'm worried that I'll have long-term problems now.

Well, another way to look at it, if you had collision on it you would have been paying $500-1000 per year for insurance depending on your age. Possibly more if you are under 25; for me when I was under 25 collision was double what I was paying for PLPD. So you sorta aren't out the entire price of the car.

You'd also have to pay a deductable with Collision which would have been $500 to $1000 as well. Had you saved that extra money, coupled with the salvage for your car, and the money you'd save with the deductable, you probably could replace it or come close. Of course most people don't really save that extra money...Plus if the accident is 100% your fault, you might be just as well living without Auto Insurance as your premiums could go up big time.

Well since its no collision, your car isnt techniqally a write-off. Baically totalled = going to cost more money to fix than the car is worth. So you could fix your car yourself and get it to an alright standard. Of course you'll never be able to sell this car in the future, but it should still be able to get you from A to B

I think the car would still have to pass an inspection if it's written off even though it is retained by the original owner.

Nah no injuries. I got a nice shiner on my forehead from the airbag hitting the brim of my baseball hat, and driving it into my forehead. Just looks/feels like I got popped by a baseball or something to that extent. Went to the doctor just to be sure, and he did a bunch of tests on me and he felt it was fine. Said I may be stiff when I wake up tomorrow though, and for the next few days. We'll see.
Also she said she wasnt injured either, which was checked off on the police report. Hopefully it stays that way...

I got into an accident just before christmas. damage to my car was est around 14,000, and they valued my vehicle at around 18,000. So they ended up writing it off. No air-bag delployment either, my bumper slid under the bumper of the other vehcile.
And yes, once any car gets a "salvage" title, it needs to pass inspection if and when the vehicle is fixed.
Long story short, I ended up finding exactly the same type of car (different color) and used my write off check and got me a new car.

After you've rear ended someone it's pretty hard to blame the other guy but if you can prove the original driver stopped unsafely or was stoned, you may have a chance.
